It's been awhile since I've posted, and it's been a difficult time health wise. I had a 3 month journey w/ whooping cough, and my ribs were banged up pretty bad. No sooner had that ended and I was in the hospital w/ a lodged kidney stone & infection. My spine top to bottom is a mess. I have been so worn out from all the 'fun'.

This winter has been tough w/ the snow & bitter cold, but I thought if we just get thru that last strom, we will be fine. So much for that dream.

We had our last storm on the 5th, I had gone out to shove - not shovel, a path so I could walk our dogs. I was going out for round 2 when the snow stopped. Before I could get my winter gear on, my DH grabbed the leashes and went out. He doesn't see well due to retinopathy, plus he has neuropathy in the feet. He went out into the street and found a patch of ice. He fell hard! Just about everything on his left side is broken. They took him to local hosp, but w/ the extent of his injuries they had to transfer him to a hosp in the next county. He lost a lot of blood and needed transfusions. Before he got the blood, he was 'not right', his color was bad and he was not coherent. As they went to get scan of head & lungs for possible stroke or blood clots, his heart rate dropped into the 20's.

He was in trauma icu & cicu for the past wk. They had to do 1 surgery at a time. So far, all are done. I have been w/ him for about 98 % of the time. I have been on the phone most of today trying to get help w his LTD, & several other problems we're having now financially.

I thought I was going to lose him so many times in the past 2 wks. But God has been good to me, so far. I feel like such a wuss. I hurt so badly and then I look at him and I think I have no right to complain.

For months I've been dealing w/ my pain, and keeping a low profile. Right now, I just don't feel as strong physically or emotionally, so I'm going to ask if you could send some prayers & or good thoughts our way. I just want my darling to be able to come home to me.

Alice, so sorry you are dealing with so much!

I hope and pray things will get better SOON for both you and your husband. We are thinking of you and wish you the absolute best. God bless and please keep us posted.

Oh my gosh, Alice! It hasn't been that long since you endured Hurricane Sandy and now this! I know you folks have had a wretched winter but spring is coming and this will help you and your hubby feel better.

Alice many times your husband has gone through medical problems but always comes out of them. Look. He's gone through several surgeries and is still on the mend. Remember, he won't leave until its his time and I know God is with you every step of the way.

I'll be praying for your husband for a quick recovery and for both of you for happier, healthier, more peaceful days ahead. Feel free to email me if you need to talk. You know I'm here for you.

Now THAT is a rough winter. I gotta hand it to you, you're handling it better than I certainly would. And keep in mind that your pain is different than his, yours is so amplified due to stress that you could actually feel just as rotten without the broken bones. Give yourself some credit. :)

I send to you my most positive thoughts and hope this all fixes itself swiftly, including the finances. Send us updated and wish you the best of luck and patience.

I was sorry to hear of everything you're going through. That is really the definition of a rough winter. I will keep positive thoughts for your husband and you. I hope everything gets better soon.

Thank you so much, my dear Ladies. I would have responded sooner, but my computer is acting up - couldn't get on.

My DD has been taking me up & back from the hosp in between her school & work hrs. We have gotten home about 10:30 - 11:00 at night. I know we have to be up before the crack of dawn, so I hate to ask her to take a look for me. She still has a ride ahead to get home. But my sweet baby found out and stayed late to get me back on the comp.

My DH was released from the hospital in the next county and transported by ambulance to a rehab down here by me. We had another snow storm yesterday, 7 more inches I really didn't need. The hospital didn't have much and couldn't understand why I didn't want my DH transported in this mess. They were surprised by the snow in our area.

He is in tremendous pain, but he is doing the PT they have for him. He is unable to sit up or move on his own. It takes 3 ppl to get him into an upright position. They have him sit on the side of the hospital bed for a few minutes. Yesterday he was up to 10 min, then he had to lay down - everything was spinning for him. They did rotations on his shoulder and and moved his legs and feet. He was exhausted. He still has no appetite, but drinks some water. They have him on Ensure, & he drinks about 1/2 of that bottle per meal.

I'm going up to the rehab in a bit, hopefully, this place will get him back to his life.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your prayers & good thoughts. I saw so many 'old' friends here, plus some 'new' friends, and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are such good ppl.

Alice, thank you for the update. You have to be absolutely exhausted. Please pace yourself as much as possible and take good care of YOU. You can't help your husband if you are completely drained.

I'm really happy that your hubby is out of the hospital and closer to you now. What a relief that has to be for you. With all that he broke in the fall and all of the surgeries, it will take him time to have less pain and get his strength back. But he will. He always does.

He's very lucky to have you, Alice, and I'm sure you feel the same about him. As they say...love conquers all! God bless you both.

Alice, I have been thinking of you and your husband and praying for you. If you feel comfortable doing so, could you give us an update? If you don't care to, I certainly understand. (Or perhaps there's not much news since the 21st?)

I am so sorry to hear of your difficult times. When it rains it pours ( or should I say snow!) it has been a terrible winter on the East Coast.
You and your husband will be in my thoughts and prayers. I pray your husbands rehab goes quckly. I used to call Physical Therapy -PT -Physical torture! It can be very painful but very important.

Try and and give yourself a break. It is ok to say u r in pain. It is not saying your husband isn't , but u are entitled to have feelings too.
I remember when my son was in the hospital I stayed with him for 5 nights and didn't leave. I was in sooo much pain....the stress and long hours of being worried, not sleeping will absolutely takes its toll on u or anyone😰

Again, let me say, Thank You So Much!!!

Your prayers and concern mean a lot to me. My DH is still in the rehab. He has been eating and getting some sleep. The dr here has finally gotten ride of those darn hiccups. What a difference that makes, let me tell you.
He goes to OT 1 time a day, and PT is 2x a day. They generally don't have PT on the wkend, but they came in today to get him out of the bed and into the wheelchair. That is an event! He has not use of the left side at all, so the therapist has to use a transfer board and a piece of slick material to move him from the bed to the wheelchair. The whole time my heart is in my throat.

Yesterday it was three wks since the surgery on his hip & pelvis. Monday it will be two wks since the surgery on the shoulder. The dr seems to think the wounds are healing very nicely. We were told it takes 8 wks for the bones to heal. I have those dates marked on my calendar.

An eye dr came in last night and did an exam. He said the pressure in his eyes was good. That was a concern!

My SIL and her DH gave us a lift chair, plus a wheelchair & walker for when my DH comes home. All that stuff came to my house this morning, so earlier this wk I had to rearrange my living room. It will be a big help when he gets home.

A few of the 'Dog ppl' on our block have come up to me asking how my DH is doing and offering to walk my 'boys' for me. My immediate neighbors have all been very good to me, calling, texting, & keeping an eye on the house.

The weather forecast for our area today was a bit of snow, so I was rather pleased to see a sunny day greet me - till late this afternoon. I am so tired of snow!!

I have been doing laundry like a crazy woman - How can you tell? lol They want my DH to have shorts & button-down short sleeve shirts to wear in rehab. The tee shirts are a big problem to get on & off. So I had to go buy those items, then I've been washing them. They should be ready for morning.

Right now, I'm basically living my new normal life. Trying to keep his spirits up and keeping mine up, too. If I keep myself busy, I don't have much time to dwell on things. I go to bed exhausted, have a hard time falling asleep and then I wake up way too early. When he gets home & is in bed next to me, I think I will finally be able to sleep.

Achey - I have to tell you, I laughed at your version of PT, Too Funny! My husband calls the one woman a Physical Terrorist. She laughs! At least he still has his sense of humor. Thank you for your kind words & your prayers. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the update, Alice. It sounds as though things are moving in the right direction. That's great!

It's so hard to see a loved one undergoing any difficult situation. My husband had major surgery last year, followed by some unforeseen complications, and what a roller coaster ride that was! I was exhausted, just trying to keep up. I would guess it's the same for you.

Taking one day at a time was helpful to me; sometimes just one hour! I brought several books with me to the hospital and got more reading done there than I had in years! It helped divert me from the stress while being enjoyable.

Yes, keeping busy is a good way to not dwell on things--a smart idea! I think at times like that, we just keep on keeping on, and work our way back to the way things should be, gradually, but it surely takes patience. It is also very tiring, as you've noticed! I hope you can take some time to do something you enjoy.

I've noticed if I keep waking up at night, sometimes saying a prayer or two (or more) helps me relax and get back to sleep. Maybe it would work for you?

LOL---a 'physical terrorist'---yes, laughter is good for us. I'm glad your husband can see the humor and it sounds like another sign that things are looking up.

Hang in there, Alice. You are doing so well, despite the trials. Keeping up the good thoughts and prayers and sending a hug!

Prayer continue..

I tell my physical therapist somethings like " I was thinking about you in the middle of the nite." And smiling, "yeah I was cussing at you". She know I abhor cursing at it is a joke.

It is tough for both of you'll & good friends are a real treasure !
