Stressed to the max!!!

Hey Guys!!

I think I need a pat on the back. My 15 year old daughter has been having migraine headaches that can last for days over the past few months. They've done a CT and it showed everything was fine, thank goodness! Last week she saw a neurologist and he diagnosed her with cronic migraines. She's missed more school in the past month than she has the entire year!!

She started with another headache on Sunday. I called her neurologists office yesterday to see if he could call her something else in for nausea because the phenegran kept her up the night before. I also had tried everything and she had taken imitrex Sunday and Monday, we were told she wasn't to take it more than 2 days in a row. After telling the nurse everything she had taken and the amts he dr says we need to go to the ER. So off we go for what would be 7 hour trip!!!

In the ER they ended up giving her a shot of the imitrex that didn't help and Tylenol #3 which also didn't do much. They obviously don't have much to give to young people with migraines because that was it and he said the Tylenol #3 was a last resort!! Really?!

Tomorrow she has an appointment with her regular dr for a referral to MUSC in Charleston. Hopefully they will be able to do something.

Going through all of this has really put a lot of stress on me and I started a flare today. I so hope tomorrow when I get up it is gone. If not I will keep on keeping on and do what I need to for her. Just please, if you pray, keep us in your prayers.

Prayers being sent, having suffered from migraines since I was a teen I know how she feels, I'm so sorry she is going thru this and I hope they can find something that will help her. Hope your flare doesn't last too long either.

Its hard as a mom to see our kids suffer.

I like to pray for their doctors to be inspired to find what helps them. So i will pray for that tonight..

There are acupressure points for stress..you might want to google those and try it out..sometimes i just feel my breathing calming in about a minute. Its a small tool we can use , when our stress is high.

She takes 100 mg of the imitrex. But it hasn't really helped much. They started her out with 25 then went to 50 and now 100. They did give her something else for the nausea that dissolves on her tongue.

I just hope this isn't the beginning of fibro or lupus for her. It runs on both sides of her family.

Betsy, online dr mercola had some articles on the migrains..i know some have gotten relief with the b vitamins..that are mentioned in the article.

Betsy, I'm praying for you and your daughter. I know first hand how it feels to have a child with a chronic illness. I have a son with Cystic Fibrosis, and it's heart wrenching when they're sick.

I'm sorry you're in a flare. I went into one over telling my boss I was "retiring". A little ironic that quitting my job to improve my health sent me into a really bad flare. That's fibro for you. Always looking to make things difficult.

I have migraines too, and I feel so bad for your girl. I hope you find what works for her very soon. Sometimes all I can do is lay in a very dark, QUIET room and just go through it. :(

So sorry to hear about your daughters migraines. It is heartbreaking to see you kids in pain.
I get migraines a lot as well. I am on nortriptyline to try and help prevent them but when I get one I take a RX called Cambia. I do not know if it is ok for children though. It is a powder that u Mis with a little water. It is a MIRACLE drug for me. With in 20 min my pain is reduced to bearable. I recommend it to everyone I know. That is how much of a difference it has made in my life. I also get terrible nausea with the migraines. It will take my medication for this to help me stop vomiting then will take the Cambia . It may be worth asking the Dr about.

I hope your flare doesn't last long and that your daughter finds relief very soon.

Oh! I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's migraine ordeal. There is nothing worse that seeing you child in pain and not being able to help. My daughter and I both suffer chronic migraines. She's now 18, but they moved from every so often to chronic 3 1/2 years ago. We ended up having to move her to an independent study program, since they hit hardest around school hours. Have they tried zofran for the nausea? Also, DHE for a migraine abortive? Those often work well. We both take Phenergan for nausea, and DHE makes our migraines worse, but the docs tell us we're wired, as those two protocols usually work well. The other thing that has truly made a difference has been Botox. Apparently, there is a standard pattern for injectionw, but our neuro (love him!) works with us and injects forehead, scalp, top of spine/base of head area, and shoulders, scapula/shoulder blade areas (basically, wherever there are muscle spasms that trigger the chronic migraine pain.). For me he also does behind the ear/edge of skull & TMJ area. My daughter also has her forehead done. We go every 3 months, and it makes a world of difference. She's on Topamax and I take Celexa for preventatives. She too spent 2 weeks in the hospital when her migraines initially escalated to chronic, so I TRUELY feel for both of you. It's been a VERY hard road for us. I had her go through a bio-feedback/guided imagery/self-hypnosis program to give her some drug-free tools to tackle the pain.

On a happy note, she ended up graduating class valedictorian at the independent study high school!

Betsey, have you had her eyes checked? I have a friend who had an ongoing migraine and it turned out to be because of her eyes. Her lenses needed to be changed in her glasses. I know this sounds so simple but you've tried everything else.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to thank you all for your prayers and uplifting thoughts!! Also wanted to let you know that Thursday, 4/9, Cayley has an appointment with a headache specialist at MUSC Children's Hospital. We are so grateful because her original appointment wasn't until June! I called and advised of her situation and all the school she's missing and I got a call yesterday that they had changed her appointment.

I'm doing a little better but I'm sure once we get to this dr I will feel better. Once she's ok I'll be ok.
