I was having pains in my butt when I sit down. After a few minutes the pain tempers off. My doctor did a pelvic x ray and it showed degenerative disc disease. She told me I should have physical therapy. Can this disc disease cause pains in the butt?

I think so .. Often, pain we have .is referred pain from somewhere else..
I have rib pain , that is referred from my spine...
Physical therapy sounds like a great idea to stretch the spine out and hopefully relieve some of the pressure....
Also make sure you drink enough to stay hydrated..our spines need that hydration..

Yes, it can...the disc degeneration can cause ruptures of the jelly-like inside of the discs. I have several that are ruptured, one in particular that decided to launch pieces of itself into my Sciatic nerve.
Following surgery, I'm now functional (mostly) but I still have constant pain there to one degree or another. Sitting on an ice pack is what helps me.
Each case is different, and responds to different treatment. The fact that your pain tempers off after sitting a few minutes seems like a good sign. I hope it's nothing really serious.

I also recommend ice. Or ice and moist heat alternated. I am not a medical professional, but I used to be a licensed massage therapist and have experienced my own issues with back problems. The sciatic nerve is huge and frequently causes pain from areas in your back. It goes right down through your butt and in some people actually goes through the muscle. I would try the PT and also you might consider chiropractic, massage and/or acupuncture.

I don't have pain in my lower back where the disc disease is. Just in my buttocks.

Did the doctor say anything about
your SI joint ? I'm curious because i get pain in my buttocks and hips and pelvic from the SI joint dysfunction . Sitting can be very painful for me.

No, my doctor didn't say anything about
that joint. M x ray show degenerative disc disease at the 2 lower disc levels of the lumbar spine.

Its true what cindy said, a therapist once told me that some respond better to heat and some to ice, and to experiment with it to see..
When i went for massage , they often used moist hot towels, or even hot stones to loosen me up..
With fibro, we can also get trigger point pain in the rear

The pain can definitely be referred. My bulging and/or herniated discs are at the 3 lowest levels of my lumbar spine; the one where I had surgery is L4-L5. But I rarely have any significant back pain.
For many years, I had the pain just in my butt, but I could handle it. Then when the L4-L5 disc ruptured, that's when all Hell broke loose (seriously) and it became agonizing, running all the way down my leg into my foot.
Be careful.

Nsaids are good for pain relief. When my back is flaring every movement hurts me.

Is it the nerves from the spine that's causing the pain in the butt? I also get pains in the vagina and rectum every now and then.

For months I have had butt pain down the back of my left thigh. I thought it was fibromyalgiia nerve pain. My dr told me it from sciatica. She hashD it also so she knew the extreme pain I was having. Doing pt now and is getting better I just did a half hour car ride with no pain. Progress. If you can definitely go to therapy. That's one thing we Can control.
