Nyquil?

I took Nyquil for many, many years. I lived in a highly allergic environment and felt I had no choice. More than likely my body was damaged from doing so but at least I was able to sleep.

For the last five years or so, I've been taking melatonin, l-theanine, benedryl, tylenol, advil, and an antacid at night to try to sleep. After experiencing a few nights of little sleep, I took Nyquil last night and slept like a baby.

Does anyone else take Nyquil or has anyone heard of the harm it can do to a person?

I just read something that states Nyquil is the most abused OTC medication on the market. The antihistamine and one of the other ingredients actually have addictive qualities and the company has been asked to make its warning label more forceful--the 'should not be used for more than 10 days' part. It is not marketed as a sleeping aid---it is a cold medication. I have never taken it so I don't know how well it works for sleep but obviously million of others have.

It is probably safe to take it occasionally take for sleep. I think the article was addressing people who use it every night. Good luck--hope it helps.

I had a reaction to the Nyquil last night and ended with my husband taking me to the emergency room this morning. Soon after taking it last night I started getting some pretty strong heart palpitations. I eventually fell asleep and woke up in this morning with the strong palpitations. I felt very weak and very hot this morning. I almost passed out. The tests at the hospital show I'm fine. The doctor said it could have been a reaction to the Nyquil. Interesting that I was able to take it for so many years and now I'm sensitive to it.

I've had this kind of reaction happen before to feather pillows, pollution, and some meds. The moral of the story is some of us really need to be careful about what we expose ourselves to and what we put into our bodies.

I'm doing fine now, just a bit weak. The doctor prescribed the over the counter Doxylamine for sleep. I've been taking Benedryl each night, maybe this will work better for me.

The doctor also said my blood was high in sodium meaning I might have been dehydrated. I do drink what I think is a lot of water. I'll try to drink more. Good to have answers.

Nyquil has ephedrine in it so that's probably what gave you palpitations. That happens to me when I take Sudafed. Hope you're feeling better.

I went to see my primary doctor and she thinks my severe reaction was caused by Nyquil. She told me Nyquil and Sudafed can cause these kinds of reactions. She's seen it before.
