Well, I did the carpel tunnel testing today with my neurologist. The nerve conduction test was okay. I felt like a cow being stuck with a cattle prod, but I survived it. smilewinkgrin

The hard part was the nerve root test. He stuck a small needle in my arm and had me relax my arm then provide resistance in the muscle. smhair
He stuck me in about 10 different places on my hand to my neck. skull

It was sooooo painful that my body was literally shaking. smhair

He finally stated that I didn't have carpal tunnel syndrome, but had arthritis in my neck causing my hands to go numb. The Arthritis was causing a nerve to be pinched.

Hi joy,

Sorry the nerve test sounds Bad. What will they do for the pinched nerve?

Hi Joy,

That second test sounds awful. But it's probably a really good thing that you had it done.

I have a reverse curve cervical spine from a severe car accident many years ago. So I have arthritis there too. It can become extremely painful. What has helped me is watching what I eat, not lifting too much, my exercises/stretches, and my cranial fascia massage therapist.

Also a proper pillow and body pillows to keep my spine aligned during the night.

He said to be careful in lifting things, physical therapy, and if it gets worse surgery on the neck. 😟

I'm glad to hear you don't have carpal tunnel. As I said, I get it off and on. One way of knowing if carpal tunnel is causing the problem is that it usually affects the thumb, index finger, middle finger and the inside of the ring finger...the side close to the middle finger. The pinky isn't usually involved.

You might want to feel along the side of your neck and the back of the neck...especially at the base of the skull...for trigger points. Your muscles could be so tight that they are pulling things out of alignment and causing nerves to be pinched. The physical therapy should help, too.

The reason I had to do the testing is I was showing all of the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. I had the numbing sensation in my hands just like carpal tunnel.

Joy , do you use a tablet a lot? There are many new type injuries , strains from tablet use... : ) they are addicting

I have a small galaxy tab. I do use it a lot, but I try to give myself stretching breaks. I recently started using a pillow to rest my neck on and another to prop the tablet on.

I also have psoriactic arthritis and degenerative disk disease in my spine. They are the big contributing issues in this.

I had the nerve conduction test done about two weeks ago. It was definitely interesting. I was having it because of tingling issues in both hands. I passed the tests with flying colors. I have two bulging desks in my neck that he thinks might be causing it or B-12 and folic acid deficiency which I have. I've been wondering recently if I might have Fibro so I'm curious as what you said about how painful the test was for you. It didn't bother me at all so I'm hopeful that is a sign that maybe i don't have it? I don't know much about Fibro so excuse my ignorance.

The Nerve conduction study involved sending shocks from your elbow to your hand outside your body. It was okay

The electromyogram (EMG) involved the needle in my muscles. That was the painful one.

Yes. Sorry I wasn't very clear. I had both of them as well. They were definitely interesting tests.
