I found that a soothing progressive relaxation tape helps me when I'm really under a lot of stress. I tend to tense all of my muscles when I'm stressed and kind of hold myself in a perpetual fight or flight position. Progressive relaxation makes you focus on each part of your body and consciously relax it. For me, it's often that tense muscle reaction to stress that exacerbates my fibro pain.
I have a cd I bought, but if you are interested, there are probably things online you can find if you Google "progressive relaxation." I seem to remember that I found an audio online from the counseling center of a major university. I'll see if I can find it again.
Edited: Found it. This isn't the one I use, but it gives you an idea of what I'm talking about
. It's from the counseling center of Dartmouth College.
