You can massage your own neck and top of shoulders and control the amount of pressure you exert. Check at the base of your head and the sides of your neck for knots. Check your shoulders...with your hands and also using a tennis ball against a wall. You will know if you've found one because it will be very tender. If you find these, they are called trigger points. Press on each knot as hard as you can stand it and then massage it. Repeat this several times and move to the next knot. When you have done any knots you find, wait a few hours and repeat. It shouldn't hurt you as much the second time around. I co to us to do this until I'm feeling much better. This helps me and the pain usually gets less and less over a day or two.
Tylenol and or ibuprofen with food will help with the discomfort.

I find this kind of pain to be a recurring thing.
A good pillow helps - seriously, I have 'pulled' my neck sleeping. I find one that lets you head sink into it is best - so that when you are lying on your back asleep your head doesn't tip sideways.
Self massage definitely helps - as does a heating pad or ice (preference). I sometimes use a roller to (hard with the neck, roll around the bone, never on bone).
I have also used those pain patches that smell a lot - that A535 kind of stuff. Cutting the patch in half (depends on what brand you use) and sticking them to the sides of my lower neck into my back helps - sleeping with them on.
The ultimate - a massage - did this once. It was a very painful experience but released a lot of the tightness. I only did this once because it's not that easy to get one on demand. I felt a little bruised the next day but what a difference ! I also wish massages weren't so expensive.

if you go for a massage, make sure the massage therapist is trained in how to massage fibro clients. Mine know how to massage for just about
any illness...like myofacial pain syndrome along with fibro. Ask for a gentle massage too. My massage therapist says that the deep massages can hurt and aren't necessary but the therapist can charge you more money because it's a deep massage.
I get a gentle massage once a month and I'm having my massage tomorrow morning! Yay!

Try some Salonpas pain gel. It quiets the pain real well in my opinion.

I have pain mostly in my neck and shoulders. I use a bed buddy and it helps a lot. Plus relaxes the muscles.
Plus Australian Dream Cream.
I hope you find what works for you. I carry a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders. That is why relaxing the muscles helps so much. Try a hot towel first and see if it helps. Just put it around your shoulders and neck. If that helps, get a bed buddy, they hold the heat much longer.
Hugs, Karen...
