I am married and divorced--so SSI won't come into effect for some time. I have been working since I was 18. I am currently *single* though might have common-law status,as we have been together under the same roof for some time.
There are all kinds of situations and complexities in this--which is why it is so complicated. Not only is the level of illness/incapacity being gauged, so is the ability to perform work under a variety of circumstances, as well as the person's current training/work history.
I see what you mean about 50, Sherrine--it was a magic number for you to open the gates, so to speak.
Straydog--the age/current education/job history is exactly my concern. I am overly-educated,and have been seriously struggling to find a job that will even consider me,due to education and previous experience. I have heard over-qualified more times than I care to mention. When I do get into the realm of 'can be interpreted as qualified,' well, some managers don't want to take the chance, while others might give it a go. But it is a struggle to even get the manager to take a chance.
Lynn--my situation is similar to yours, although your degree is more marketable. PhD in the humanities--higher ed all the way. I have held part-time jobs--adjuncting, subbing, working for ETS. None of these things makes a living wage--or is permanent or even controllable. I am not a fan of the adjunct thing anymore--no money and lots of traveling. The one year I did it exclusively I was broke and in bed all the time. Now, my car is falling apart. The two full-time work situations I have had over the past 3 years have not worked out.
I am just getting more anxious, now. Taking a break. Thank you, all souls who responded.
