Probably one of the more frequent questions asked. The truth is if you want drugs for symptom relief any of them who is loose with a prescription pad.
Fibro is the sympathetic branch of the nervous system stuck in the activation mode. All the hard science research from around the world confirms this. Drugs can alleviate some symptoms but there is also the knowledge that it can make the condition worse over time and produce nasty neurological changes making getting off them hell on earth...and eventually they stop working or produce other painful symptoms.
Fibro is a functional condition, nothing is broken so a neurologist is out of his scope of practice in knowing how to treat fibro. Same with a Rheumatologist - there is no inflammation muscle wasting (other than deconditioning) nothing on any scan, blood test or any test...EXCEPT !!!
Tests like Heart Rate Variability will show over activation of the sympathetic nervous system in almost 100% of fibro people. This is a test rooted in hard science and used on every new born.
So what now - to recover we must work with people who know how to retrain the CNS back to the parasympathetic mode. Mind-body specialists but they are few.
I am 90% better than I was two years ago - I am 100% drug free after years of recovering from fibro drug damage. My point is going to these doctors wont ever get you better and in many cases their conclusions and treatments will make you worse.....I certainly was.
I know,I know we hurt so we feel compelled to so something, even if it is wrong and causes more suffering later. A good place to start to understand the proper treatment is with people like Daniel Neuffer at ANS Rewire. Dan is a highly credited researcher and also recovered 100% from CFS and fibro.
He is probably only one major piece along the road to recovery but he will show you the truth on what needs to be done and change your focus to doing things that actually work...armed with this knowledge you can start finding ways to create your own recovery program as you will know what to focus on.
