When i get a flare up, at times my whole body or at least parts of it seem to be locked up, like its hard to move.
eventually it goes away.

My back and my hip gets locked up. Heat, rest and pain killer are the only solution for me.
sometimes my fingers will lock up for a few seconds

Jc77 - if I sit too long and when I get up I can barely move. It does get better once I keep going. If I sit in a chair with a space heater on me i can move so much better. If I get cold or cool I lock up real quick. I bought a nice space heater and it has done wonders for me.

Yes! My legs, feet, and toes all can do this at times. It's like they go on strike and refuse to work! My back can do this, too, but rarely.

Some medications can cause this too. I've experienced this as a side effect with a few meds.
What helps me some is soaking in a warm bath.

Yep. Sitting too long, or lying too long. What I do is stretch arms, legs, joints such as hips, ankles, knees, elbows before I get up.
I often wake up this way and it can be very disconcerting. I spend a little time before sitting up actually flexing and moving, so that when I get up I can actually move.

I've stretched twice a day for 12 years. My doctor believes my doing this prevents my muscles from athropying. And it also helps my muscles be somewhat more limber.

Hi, I just came across this thread. I am 28 years old (female) and have a number of health issues. My ankles lock up, my body gets stuck in a position.. shoulders etc.. my fingers, knees hurt. But one thing I noticed with a number of the responses is that quite a few listed sleep apnea. How many people have central sleep apnea and Fibromyalgia? Also, how many people also struggle with body temperature regulation?
List of conditions: Anxiety, S.A.D, C-PTSD, central sleep apnea, REM behavior Disorder, Myoclonus, asthma, PLMD, Fibromyalgia . .. and I think that is all of my diagnoses..

Hi Mimi,
What has helped me most with the locked up feeling I can get at times is my massage therapist. She works on my tight areas and she's knowledgeable enough not to press too hard. We talked about
the different kinds of massage therapists. There are those who do spa (feel good) type massages and those like my therapist who do therapy massages--healing type massages. She works out my tightness.
When It comes to my sleep apnea, I tried the mask twice over the years and it didn't work for me. What has worked for me is melatonin and l-theanine. But I've had to up the melatonin over the years. As we get older our bodies don't produce as much natural melatonin.
And when it comes to body temperature regulation, I also have that. I don't do well in the cold or the heat. And I have to have just the right amount of blankets on my bed at night and sleep at just the right temperature.

I get stiff when sitting or standing to long. It's hard to get up but once I've moved just a little bit I do feel better. But, it starts over so I'm up and down like a jack-in-the-box.
My body hasn't regulated temps since way (my teens) before I was DX'd with fibro.
Generally, I'm colder than others and I can cover up more although I look kind of stupid taking a jacket into a restaurant when it's 100* out. LOL But mostly, if I'm really cold (like going out in winter) my body stiffens up like a board. I shiver uncontrollably. And, I am miserable. Once I'm back at room temp. and warmer I'm fine. Just uncomfortable. I do shiver hard with the heat set at 70*, though. Mostly, in the evening.
But, if I get over heated my body sort of shuts down. My muscles seem to disappear , my brain is extra fuzzy and it takes a long time to feel better even once I get cooled down. I learned my lesson the hard way. It was 60* out. Nice and cool. I decided to plant a few plants, just small ones. I got about
10 planted and I started feeling yucky. I had to crawl to the steps and up into the house.
Anyway, sorry to take up so much space.

I get that locked feeling in two differnt ways...
One is a general all over feeling during a bad flare day..
The other can be a locked trigger point area.. which i have taught myself to release many of these..
If i am in a bad flare and just rest. I find the next day the muscles will get moving again..of course that is not always possible..

Hello Mimi,
I do not have Sleep Apnea but have read and heard that sleep Apnea can contribute to Fibro type symptoms. Also my Dr. told me that good quality sleep is important to help control the symptoms of Fibro.
