Hi Everyone,

I went to see my pain doctor yesterday and asked if I might have sacroilitis. Sherrine talked about this condition of hers in another thread. I looked it up and found that I have most of the symptoms.

He pressed on my SI joints, found that I have pain there, and sent me home with a SI belt which I am suppose to wear during the day.

Sherrine, I was wondering if you have one of these belts and whether you think it helps?

Has anyone else been diagnosed with this condition?

We certainly need to be our own best detective when it comes to our bodies.

No, I don’t wear a belt. I have never heard of them. Besides, my skin is very sensitive and a belt would not only be irritating to me but would hurt too.

I use Robaxin which is a muscle relaxer and ibuprofen and Tylenol for the pain. This has worked well for me. Before taking these, I could hardly lift my foot an inch off the floor to just take a baby step. The pain was excruciating and I would have tears streaming down my cheeks when I had to walk to the bathroom. I needed two canes to walk and I thought I was going to have to sell my home and go into assisted living. I even went to the extent of not eating or drinking much so I wouldn’t have to use the bathroom because the pain was so unbelievable when I tried to walk. Stupid!

I started the ibuprofen again and started searching about Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is like a rheumatoid arthritis of the spine, and also sacroiliitis and discovered the suggestion of Robaxin to help with pain on a National Institutes of Health site. I asked my rheumy if he would prescribe it, he did, and I got my life back...in spades! I haven’t felt this good in years.

Sacroilitis is inflammation of the SI joint or joints. Arthritis can trigger this, I believe you said the dr says you have arthritis, more than likely this is you culprit. Osteoarthritis is one of those type of arthritis that is a wear & tear condition. As we age nearly everyone gets it, some worse than others. Some drs will recommend the belt, it is to help the hips tight. OTC meds can help also, such as Tylenol or an NSAID. Sitting, standing too long or taking too long of a stride can keep things aggravated too. Physical therapy is another option, a good therapist can show you good stretching exercises that can help.

I hope you can figure out what brings you the most relief.

Susie, yes I was diagnosed years ago with osteoarthritis and I agree it does worsen with age. So I do just about everything I can to not have that happen.

Information is knowledge and coming into this website is a great place to learn more about what we can do for ourselves.

Sherrine, thanks so much for sharing. I'm so sorry you went through all of that pain. And I'm so glad you found relief and you're able to live a more normal life!

Thank goodness for the internet so we can have information at our fingertips from reputable websites.

Concering the belt, Sherrine. You might want to ask your doctor about it. I wear it under my shirt but on top of my pants so there are no skin issues.

I don’t have the bad pain anymore plus I have a huge, inoperable hernia and the belt would not work for me. I’m glad it’s helping you though.
