Sores on my tongue

I am wondering if anyone has experienced sores on their tongue, or on their gums? They actually started with one inside my nose, then one on my gums and now have 2 on my tongue. They started about a month ago. I can handle the ones in my nose and gum,but the 2 on my tongue are so sore! I have rinsed my mouth with salt water, peroxide and orajel mouth rinse, nothing seems to help. Has anyone else had this issue, if so any ideas on pain relief.? I have had sores in my mouth before and they usually clear up in a couple days, these just keep my mouth sore. Thank you

Hi, Nannie, and welcome! I also have Crohn’s disease and I would get sores, like canker sores on my tongue and along the sides of my tongue. I also would occasionally get them on my gums too. When I had them on my tongue, I could barely eat and it even hurt to talk because I had so many! So I do know how painful it really is.

Like you, I tried everything to no avail. Then I got thinking. (Uh oh 😁). We have a lot of bacteria in our mouths and alcohol can kill bacteria so I got a small bottle of rum, poured some in a shot glass and put it in my mouth and started swishing it. OMG! It burned like a son of a gun but I continued for about fifteen seconds and then spit the rum out into the sink. My mouth was still burning some but not as badly and, pretty soon I noticed my tongue wasn’t hurting as much either! So that evening I repeated this and it didn’t burn nearly as badly.

I got up the next day and my tongue was even better so I used the rum again and also that evening. My tongue was fine that next morning! I’ve had to do this several times over the years but not very often. I don’t seem to get the canker sores like I did!

My children were in elementary school when I first did this. about a year later one of my kids came to me and said they had a bad sore in their mouth and it really hurt. I told them what I did and that it really burned but it cleared up my canker sores so they wanted to try since the sore was so bad. Since I would NEVER give my children alcohol, I put some rum on a q-tip and put the q-tip on their canker sore. Yes it burned but they knew that would happen. I did it again that evening. It didn’t burn them as much and by the second day the sore was gone! So my kids would come to me to use the rum on canker sores if they got any!

When I first told this story on HealingWell, one of the mods teased me and called it medicinal rum. 😂. Some members tried it and it worked for them. I do not drink alcohol but I always have some rum on hand for canker sores.

Hi Nannieof3, I can sure relate to what you have going on. As Sherrine mentioned about her kids getting them, I remember those days well. My mom always had me rinse my mouth with salt water. Even as a kid they were painful.

This subject has been discuss many times over the years in another forum. The proper name is aphthous ulcers, fancy name for canker sores, lol. Here is some remedies posted by members that said it worked for them. Mixing equal parts of liguid Benadryl & Maalox, swish it around in your mouth & spit out, folic acid lozenges to suck on & use toothpastes & mouth washes that do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate. I also read this at the Mayo Clinic's website about the tooth paste & mouth washes. I suggest you go to Mayo Clinic.com & read their info. Mayo mentions low folic acid being a potential culprit. It is not clear what causes these but they are ways to treat them. Last but not least, if they become too bad, see your dentist, he can rx a mouth rinse to clear them up.

Good luck on getting rid of them.

I like medical irish whiskey ..i have sensitive gums especially in a flare..so i will swish irish whiskey, jameson ..cannot drink much as i am sensitive to the alchohol , and i use it diluted with water. Since its highly diluted , i do not spit it out😉

Nannie, it seems like there may be an underlying condition causing the sores, so maybe try the alchohol,

But research the underlying cause..

Ps..i do remeber getting some sores when i was younger..i think maybe my immunity was low, and i take a vitamin c for that..and have not had sores for many years

Thank you so much to all of the advice! I think I am going to try the rum, I do not drink but am going to buy some!
I am so grateful for this forum, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 2 years ago, after having lots of pain for years for years. This forum has been such a comfort to me. I have looked up lots & lots of issues! Even tho I wish not a single person suffered with fibro, it is nice to go on here, find a topic that I am experiencing and read how others are dealing with it. It’s nice to know there are others out there that understand how your feeling. I am blessed to have a husband that is very understanding, but let’s face it, unless you have had these issues you cannot truly understand, but he tries!

Let me know if it works for you! Don’t rinse your mouth out with water after the rum. Let the alcohol do its’ work. At least it’s a nice flavor. 😂. I don’t drink either but I like the flavor of rum.

Do you have problems with dry mouth? Lots of fibromites do (especially if they take medications); I take a lot of antihistamines for asthma and allergies, and I have trouble with dryness. Dry mouth is another culprit in the fight against mouth ulcers. I use ACT dry mouth toothpaste and Biotene gel before bed.

If the medicinal rum or maalox/benadryl mouthwash don't work, there is something called Zilactin-B that you spread on (kinda like ora-jel), and it forms sort of like a band-aid seal over the sore. I use this when I get a particularly bad one. It seals it to help it heal, and it really helps with irritation. It can be hard to find, but I have gotten it at Walgreens and online at Amazon. It's the best stuff I've found for mouth ulcers.

Thank you so much for the advice, I tried the rum and it worked right away on 3 places in my mouth. I had one on the side of my tongue that took a few days of rinsing with it. Yes My mouth does get dry, Ikeep the. Bioteen in my purse and use quite regularly!
