Last week I read an article on another fibro website and it mentioned that sometimes people with fibro smell smoke---but there is no smoke nearby and no one else can smell it! I have been smelling smoke occasionally for a few months now, so that explains it! I have gone so far as to walk all over the house, seeing if someone left a candle burning or if there's a small fire somewhere. A few times I asked my husband if he smelled something burning but he didn't. Evidently, my sense of smell sometimes works overtime.

Has anyone else had this happen? Sorry I don't recall which website I read this on, if anyone is interested, but I just did a quick search on "fibromyalgia smell smoke" and several things came up.

Wow, Ljm, I haven’t had that happen. Odor...good and bad...is stronger for me but I haven’t smelled something that wasn’t there. But I’m sure that could happen with this crazy illness! If there is a room deodorizer that doesn’t affect you badly, try giving your room a little spritz and see if that helps. It would smell better than smoke!

Oh yes indeedy! I definitely smell smoke when no one around me does. I'm always smelling things in general that other people don't, and whatever I smell, it's intense...I can't use scented candles or wear perfume at all anymore. They make me nauseous, even if it's a scent I love (just one more thing that's been taken away...the gift that keeps giving is right!)

At least 3 times over the years, I've been right when I smelled natural gas in the house or yard. The gas company guy shows up and it turns out there actually is a leak. I was doing PT recently at a warm-water pool and each time I went, I'd smell gas. I mentioned it several times. They just said, "hmmm," looked at me like I was nuts, and I don't imagine they ever checked, but who knows...maybe they did. I'm not going there anymore, but I hope the place doesn't blow sky high someday!

So weird.

Using a room deodorizer is a great idea, Sherrine! In fact, I just bought a nice apple-cinnamon scented one--nice for the Fall. Thanks for the idea. Much more of a pleasant scent, for sure.

Debbie: Glad to know I'm not the only one. The soap aisle in the grocery stores used to really bother me, but not so much anymore. Where this "smokey" scent thing came from, I have no idea! It does seem to be tapering off a bit, so it could even be some kind of a sinus-related issue. Yes--so weird!

I have smelled smoke before whenit was not there, but mostly smells just seem acute to me..

Lets talk bathroom cleaners? They are changing what i could use..so i need a disinfectant that will not make me ill using it...sigh..i usually can use lemon scents..

Hi Lj: Those smells can sure be tricky! The past week or so has been better, so I'm not sure if it was the change in the weather that helped or what. Who knows?

I used to have to almost plug my nose when I walked past laundry detergent in the stores--it was too much.

Hmm....bathroom cleaners? Could you maybe make your own with just a few drops of tea tree oil or something like that? The first time I made some I foolishly added too much scent and it seemed to stay in my nose for hours! I learned my lesson....

I have noticed some inks used in newspapers or even catalogs, almost have a smokey smell to me...some even give me an instant headache....as they seem to use cheaper inks in the print..i even really dislike the feel of it on my hands..

Just a thought on what you may be smelling?

That's a really good guess, Lj. I'd never even considered that.

Now that you mention it, I have noticed, too, that some catalogs, papers, etc. have strong smells and that could be a factor here. Strange that there's such a difference, but maybe like you said, it's cheaper ink. I prefer the "unscented" inks!

I get one magazine every other month that is really potent due to whatever type of print/inks they use. Nice glossy photos of crafts, and I really enjoy reading it, but wow--a bit much.

Yes, I smell all sorts of weird things. But about 25 years ago, I got a really bad virus, high temp...all around the time I probably developed FMS, and I couldn't smell or taste much after that. But......I smelled smoke a lot! I still smell it intermittently. I was so glad when the kids were old enough to tell me that they didn't smell any smoke..

It's a real problem when you think something's burning, and there's no one else to say "No, I don't smell anything."
During that time I was on some forums about this, and it was amazing how many people were smelling smoke and/or something electrical burning. Very strange!

Hi Cathy: Sorry you, too, are dealing with this weird symptom. Mine has gotten better recently; I really don't know why! It's strange--I never had this years ago when I began to have fibro symptoms. The symptoms seem to sometimes evolve over time.

I know what you mean: It's a relief when someone else tells you they don't smell any smoke! Goodness, I've had times when I looked in every room in the house! Oh well, at least it turns out okay--nothing burning up!

I have smelled a sulfurish smell occasionally in the middle of the night. But weeks go by in between, where I dont. And it's only 1 night, not when I 1st go to bed, or when I wake up, it's gone. It's just here & there in the middle of the night. So weird.

Hi JacScorp and also, welcome! Sorry I didn't reply earlier, but with the holidays I haven't visited the forum very often, and I just recently noticed your post.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry you're also dealing with something like this, but as you said, it's just here and there with weeks in between when you don't smell anything.

Thankfully, I've had several "clear" weeks now, with no smoky smell bothering me, and I'm hoping it continues indefinitely. Hope it is the same for you!

I’m happy to see you haven’t had this problem lately! Let’s hope you never have it again. That would drive me batty...hunting all over the house. Yikes!

Hi Sherrine: Yes! I think that's the thing--for me, I had to look all over the house, thinking something may be burning just about anywhere. It took a bit for me to get past that; yet when I did smell something like smoke, I still felt the need to look around. We have 3 floors, so at least it gave me some exercise climbing stairs, LOL! smile
