Possible dx, now what

The chiropractor did an actual physical exam and says fibromyalgia is more likely than osteoporosis.  He recommended some good self-care and enzymes, probiotics, omega 3 and glucosomine.  He said to try the glucosomine before buying malic acid because malic acid can be expensive. 

My gp did not acknowledge my question about fibro.  I looked on the website for my hmo which does have info.  The page "when to call a doctor" basically says I should call a doc and the most experienced are rheumatologists and pain management specialists. 

If you were me, would you push to see a rheumatologist or just stick with chiropractor and give up on the gp doc?

Hi Sue,

Has your GP not already suggested a rheumy?  What has he said about your pain?  Why are you seeing a chiropractor? I must have missed another post of yours? I'm sorry if I did.

I personally would NOT put my health in the hands of someone who wasnt a medical doctor. Make an apptmt with your family doctor and tell him you NEED answers to your health problems, and would he/she PLEASE send you to a rheumy or an internist!

So...after all that...Yes..if I were you I would push, shove, or something to get that doctor to let a specialist see you, instead of just ignoring your questions about why you feel so terrible.....sheesh...I think some of these doctors lose their compassion after awhile.

I hope someone else can add to this request.

Sue, I had been going to a orthopedic dr. for 10 years and he had no idea I had Fibro although he had told me for years that I had osteoarthritis.  He was the one that sent me to my rheumy and she dxd. me with Fibro.  You do need to get some more advice I think.

Yes, my post is kind of vague. I put some of it here and some in a reply in my other post, "simply tolerate." The chiro checked pressure points. that was unpleasant. the gp diagnosed me with osteo arthritis via email after I had only seen her one time and she did a few blood tests to rule out ra and lupus. I asked about fibro and she ignored my question. I thought about emailing her that I would like to see a rheumy to check for fibro. do rheumies take care of people with osteo, too? I hope this clarifies things some. I am so tired - gonna go get some coffee and try working on my thesis at starbucks.

I agree with the other members.  A medical doctor should be making the diagnosis.  They have far more experience and expertise than a chiropractor.

 

Also, he is wrong about malic acid being expensive.  The supplements I take have malic acid AND magnesium in them.  I get them at Puritan.com and right now they are having a "buy 1 get 2 free" sale.  They are always having sales.  But, for $16.99 you are getting 540 tablets!  I worked myself up to 4 a day.  So this is a 135 day supply for $16.99!  That sure is not expensive to me.  You can buy them elsewhere and maybe pay more but this is where I get mine.

 

I don't know if you are diabetic but, if you are, glucosamine can raise your blood sugar.  I tried that and it raised mine.  But, it is supposed to help some so it would be worth a try.

Agree...get yourself to a doctor...a rheumy. A chiro isn't qualified to dx fibro nor treat properly.

I will go and check the malic acid at the vitamin shoppe. I also sent another email to my doctor asking for a referral to a rheumatologist. The message was professional and sounded knowledgeable and I attribute that to all the great information learned from all of you.

Yep we are mostly no-nonsense gals here now.  You are not the first, and more likely not the last person to have a doctor brush you off.  I hope your doc has answered your email by this morning. You need to vent here while you wait for a proper diagnosis.

I hope you hear something from her this morning.

That's one of the great things about this forum it empowers you with the knowledge you need to talk to docs with authority. They probably sit there and think, how does she know so much about all this??? tongue They don't know about the Fingertip family.

 

Keep on til you get a solid dx from a doc.

My doctor responded last night that rheumatologists in our hmo don't see people with fibro, the pain management people do (although the website says something else).  She wants to see me and "check a few things out."  At least she is going to see me and not try to diagnose over the email again!  I don't know the things I should ask when I see her.  Please help me with that.

I don't know where your doctor is coming from but my orthopedic doctor was the one that referred me to my rheumy and my rheumy was the one that dxd. me with Fibro.  If I read correctly on this site, most of the people were dxd by a rheumy.  I think I would be looking for another dr. if I were you.

I just changed docs because my old one was so awful. I had to choose from their profiles online. Kaiser wouldn't let me try other docs. The new doc has experience in both Chinese and western medicine and I thought that was a plus. I will see how it goes on our appt. Anyway, that's why I asked the chiropractor . . . because he takes me seriously. We will see. Gonna go swimming!
