a day with the chickens - ouch my back!

We got 3 chickens and put them with the ducks.  The duck pen and old rabbit pen are connected by a fence and gate.  We opened the gate so they could be together.  The rabbit pen needs a better roof as it is covered in netting and the grapes make the netting cave in.  There were holes in the netting and the chickens flew up and roosted in the grapes.  I was afraid a fox would get them!  We cannot put in a proper roof until next week.  Also, there was netting on the floor so the rabbits could not dig out.  But they got out anyway - tricky little guys! 

So I spent yesterday and the day before bent over in half, reaching up to repair the temporary roof.  Then bent over in half to tug and pull at the floor netting (so the chickie's feet wouldn't get tangled)  and the little underground nesting box we put in for the rabbits.  It was all covered in dirt and very heavy to try to get out! 

Until we could get the other side fixed, I separated them by the gate and they all were quite unhappy about it.  They walk back and forth across the fence clucking, peeping, and quacking at each other and complaining!  So I spent more time and fixed the duck side and let them back in together and they were quite happy about that.  Silly birds! 

Now am I sore!  What I will do for my animals - they need me.  Today is better.  But I turned off the alarm and allowed myself to sleep in until 11 am!!!  whew!

Now now nono - they are little babies, still - they still peep sometimes.  Note to self: post guard at chickens.

It just sounds like you over did it. I guess that you felt that you had to get it done. But please try to pace yourself in the future.


What is it with everybody getting chickens, the price of eggs? LOL...

I use to have them when I was younger, free roaming. Quit going barefoot outside.LOL...

I can teach those chicks to fly, splat LOL. devil I did that to my mother's baby chicks one year, threw them up in the air to teach them to fly. I was young and didn't know better.

 

I hope you feel better. Sounds like you over did it.

 

So what happened to the rabbits???

That is my middle name: overdoing stuff! Yeah, I didn't realize it would take so long or be so difficult to do.

The rabbits were still babies (kits) and they managed to squeeze out of their pen, despite our best efforts in keeping them safely in there. They went in the neighbors yard and found hiding places and we could not catch them. Unfortnately, I'm afraid something else did. It was my first attempt at rabbits since we moved to this area which is more out in the country. A fox or something got the angora rabbit we brought here with us.

Ouch, Marlee! Sounds like the time my daughter broke her rabbit's neck because she was loving it too hard. We had rabbits for years and she had held them many times. But she thought the rabbit was sad and needed a big hug and . . .

We have two ducks, George and Lucy and have wanted chickens for awhile. But we wanted to make sure they had a nice place to live. I don't like keeping things in tiny cages. Now they have a nice comfy place that is safe from the predators.

Hi Stat,

My friend's son has a little backyard barnyard. He has a cow, goat, pig, and chickens. Oh yes, ducks too. His chicken coop caught on fire this spring and he lost a lot of his chickens. I felt so bad for him. He put a lightbulb in the coop to keep the little ones warm. It was really cold for a couple of days. And I guess that the lightbulb caught it on fire. Everybody is getting together to build a new one.

But the cow is getting big. It is a male, but casterated. He is getting harder to handle. They are building a fence for him to graze in. The goat can be something else. Wants to butt everything. The chicken's will chase you if you run from them. The ducks are still smaller. They did have rabbits, but they gave them away. I got him a book for his birthday "barnyard backyards". He loved it. He is 13 now I think.

Well that's my story and I am sticking to it.

That's great!  We want a goat, too, but are afraid it will eat all of the vegetation.

Wonder if the city would let me get a pigmy goat??? They are so adorable.

 

A castraded male cow is called a steer Karen. tongue

 

We had a white rabbit that thought it was a cat. I was ready to break it's neck for chewing the wires off the back of the freezer. The things I put up with when my sons were growing up.

I thought that they were called steers, but I wasn't sure, didn't want to sound too dumb, though I actually did.LOL...

Anyhow, this steer is getting big, he kicks up his heels and it looks so funny.

The rabbit was chewing the wires off of the back of the freezer? Wow, I think that it thought it was a goat. Have you ever saw those faining goats? They look so funny.

Hey, Marlee and Karen!  There is no such thing as a male cow...castrated or not!  A cow is a mature female cattle.  Male, uncastrated cattle are called bulls!  You now have had your barnyard lesson for the day...and that's no bull!  tongue

So what is the proper name??? They are all cattle but it doesn't sound right to say a nutured male cattle is a steer. Oh where, oh where did my little brain go??? Go right a head Sherrine, give me all the bull you want. devil They are bovine but so are oxen and buffalo.

 

Male rabbits are bucks and females are does. Whoever knew life down on the farm would pay off someday. tongue

Male deer are bucks and female deer are does just like the bunny wabbits. But Moose, which is the same singular and plural, are bulls and cows. Just like the cattle.?There is your wildlife lesson fer today.

OK, Marlee.  I'll go slowly!  :-)    We are talking about cattle.  A mature female is called a cow.  Babies are called calves.  A castrated male is called a steer and an uncastrated male is called a bull.

 

The terms "bull" and "cow" are used with other animals too.  But, we were talking about cattle.  You know...beef, sirloin, T-bones!  devil

 

By the way, I didn't know rabbits were called bucks and does, too!

OH dear! Stat...I'll loan you a my male "neutered" cat to guard those chickens. Actually he's afraid of them....and his own shadow too.

Didn't know we were going to have a course in animal husbandry in here...lol.

ps...I think we must be twins Stat. Overdoing it is what I do best. Today I was hauling siding around and nailing up boards as hubby held them. Up and down ladders. I know, I know...but the work has to get done.

Wow never knew anyone knew so much about cows. I never heard of a male cow. I thought the males were all bulls. See I learned something new. Thanks Sherrine. I never grew up on a farm, so that is useful information. I have a little granddaughter, so I need to know these things ya know.

So the truth comes out to why Chutzie has been so tired. nono   With my balance there is no way I could get on a ladder. That is hard work Chutzie. I hope your almost done.

 

I do know what you mean about it has to be done. We are getting further and further behind around here and we don't have chicken coops to redo. devil Today we need to get the power washer out and clean the patio off.

 

I caught the neutered thing Chutzie, I was tired last night. tongue
