Question for those who take malic acid.

So I've been reading some of the info on malic acid. The one thing that really stood out was that people with fibro tend to be deficient in it. So for all of you who take this supplement, have any of you actually had any testing done to see if you were deficient in it or not?

I didn't have testing.  I am being tested next week to see if I'm deficient in vitamin B.  I tried the supplements and felt much better so I know I was deficient.  The supplement won't hurt you.  You can get malic acid and magnesium through foods that you eat, but you have to eat a lot to get what you really need.  I spoke with my doctor and pharmacist before trying them and they said they could hurt me so I gave it a shot and am sooo happy I did!

 

Did you read the malic acid/magnesium thread?  Everything is explained there and I just bumped it up for a newbie.  Check it out if you haven't already.

Well I didn't read the whole topic, just the first post. I started to read the first link in the list of links to other articles but it was really complicated and I had a hard time focusing on it. I might give it another shot though.

The first post is the main post.  I asked people not to post on the thread but they did anyway.  I explain all about the supplement and the links in the first post explain about malic acid and magnesium and how it works in your body and how people with fibro can be deficient in them.  There is also a link to scientific studies that have been done and show that this helps many with fibro.

I have read through the thread and I'm convinced to try it. I had an appointment on Monday morning to see my doctor but he never showed up. I sat in a room for almost an hour (really) before they asked if I wanted to reschedule. Apparently he was detained at the hospital, so I'm seeing him Friday morning (I hope). I am going to ask him to do blood work to see if I'm deficient in any vitamins. I have been taking magnesium tablet for awhile, I can't remember why I started them but I have noticed a little difference, I only recently increased the amount. The supplement is Calcium Complete from GNC, it's 300 mg of vitamin c 1200 mg of Calcium and 600 mg Magnesium oxide. It also has 50 mg of Betaine. I have been taking 4 tablets a day. I don't no if the doctor will be willing to test me if I'm taking supplements but I'm going to ask. Has anyone noticed a difference with just taking the magnesium?

My cousin said she could sleep much better.  She is the only one that I know that just took magnesium.  She now take both.

You should ask them to test you for vitamin D also. Most fibromites are low in that. I take about 2,000 iu a day. It really helps you to feel better.

I also take the malic acid/magnesium supplements and they help a lot. I noticed right away that my muscles felt better and I think that came from the magnesium. Then it wasn't long after I felt better all around. Still not completely, but better than I was. I don't think that I will ever be completely better. But I am much happier and more energetic than I have been for a long time.

I'm very excited about trying both.  I hope my doctor doesn't have any issues with it.  It's good to know to have vitamin D tested.  I would like to have a complete test taken but will settle for the big ones.  I have a list of things I want to talk to my doctor about.  Maybe that's why he didn't show up yesterday, he seen me coming with my list smilewinkgrin .

The deficiency in malic acid is in the mitochondria of the cells so there is no serum (blood) test for it. The researchers who discovered the deficiency were doing lots of in-depth lab work and the results were found at a cellular level. I've been taking the malic acid and additional magnesium for over four years now. I had read about it in a book from a friend who had chronic fatigue syndrome and decided to try it. Whenever I run out or forget to pack it for a trip I really regret it! Works for me!
