Tramadol for fibro pain

Hi, everyone! I finally got my doctor to prescribe Tramadol for my neck and shoulder pain. He was very reluctant, but agreed after me telling him others on this forum had been prescribed Tramadol for fibro pain.  I took my first dose today, it was 100mg of the Tramadol ER.  I got absolutely no pain relief.  My question to others taking it is do you take a higher dosage? He said if it did not help he would go up to 200mg.  What dosage are you other fibro sufferers taking and is it helping you?  Thanks for any info. you can give me.

Hi Hope,

I'm glad your doc decided to work WITH you on this and not just dictate. My doc has told me to print off interesting items from the forum and bring them in. Some docs truly are human...lol.

I tried Tramadol a very log time ago and I can't remember the dose, but I do know many others on the forum have tried it so they can help. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

Chutzie, thanks for you words of encouragement and support. I really appreciate it! I'll keep you posted as to how tramadol works for me. I think I'm probably going to have to increase the dose. I'll give it a few days and see how I do with it.

Hey Waterbaby: I was prescribed tramadol several years ago. It seemed to work at the 100mg. for about two months, then it gradually stopped working. I think if you've ever been on any of the older pain meds, as I had been from time to time, your tolerance may be high. That was my problem. having been in a Motor Vehical Accident and on stronger meds for extended periods of time, the Tramadol just wasn't strong enough. But, and it's a big butt, there is a threshold with Tramadol, that if crossed regarding maximum dosage, can cause your respiration to halt, ie your breathing may slow down. I can't remember the exact number but you can check package insert or call pharmacist or doctor. I did get some relief for a number of mnths. Good luck.

I was put on tramadol in May. At first, I didn't think that it helped much but after taking it on a regular basis I came to realize that it was helping. It doesn't get rid of the pain but it definitely takes the edge off. I don't take the Extended Release(ER) although I did try it. I take 50mg tablets and I can adjust the doseage as I need to. I did not feel that the ER version was worth the extra $. I can get just as much relief from the 50mg tabs and I can adjust the doseage. My rheumy did say that 240mg seems to be the "magic number" although it doesn't come it that exact strength. I take 50-100mg every morning before I get up to get ready for work. Then 6 hours later, I take another dose if I need to. It has truly helped. Like I said, I am not pain free but it does make life a little easier. Hope this helps and you will feel better soon...

hi. i am taking 2x 50mg up to 5 x day and 6 diahydrocodeine and clonazepam at night to help relax muscle and stop morning stiffness and none of it works. but at least i not totally on this planet, so i suppose it helps a bit. had tried nuerotin about 2 yrs ago but i put on a lot of wieght so was taken off it. the research i hav done into fm says that pain medication DOES not work on fm pain. it would be a great help if i could find a fm dr who actually nos wot he talking about.

I agree with cyndiO. I take it, for about the last 5 yrs. I didn't think it was really helping me, so I quit taking it after the first year.( I think part of my doubt came from the fact that it didn't make me feel like pain pills make you feel, you know, kinda groggy and numb and itchy.) once I quit taking it, I realized pretty quickly how much it was helping me, and I went back on it. like cyndiO, it doesn't get rid of the pain. it takes the edge off the pain, makes it more bearable. at times I wish I had something stronger for pain, but my mother is a pill addict, and I worry about following in her footsteps, and so I have never asked for anything stronger for the fibro. I have had some stronger pain relievers when I had dental problems, and all that does is make me itch like a crazed person.

I am prescribed to take two 50mg tramadol 3 times a day. I used to take it on a regular schedule when my health was worse, but things have gotten better now, so I don't take it regular. I may have 4-6 pills a day for a few days, and then go 4-5 days without taking any. I do not hesitate to take them when the pain is intense. I do, on occasion, take 3 pills at a time. I treat a lot of the pain with heating pads, salan pas pain pads and now am doing the malic acid and magnesium and that has taken more of the edge off too.

I can only take small amount of tramadol due to tummy and other meds I'm on so it's not much help to me when it comes to intense pain but it does help if the pain is not too intense. Most of the time I can't tell much of a difference cause I don't take it til the pain is really bad.

Hey, ladies. Doc gave me tramadol for pain and it knocked me out. I'd take it and 5 minutes later be asleep at the computer. I have asthma and I think it slows my breathing way down and I'm not getting enough oxygen. Ever hear of that?

Also, new to this. Right now I am just a little stiff and about a 4 on pain scale. Does FM get better and then worse and then better?

Hope- I have been on Ultram for a while now, maybe 4 years. I currently take 100 mg twice a day, and if I need it, I up the dosage. I have learned that it is safe to take up to 400 mg per day. It doesn't make me sleepy, and I have no ill effects from it. Good luck with pain management!

Hi This2willpass and welcome. I'm glad you joined us. I took tramadol 50mg too close together one time and had some funny feelings from it. My heart sped up and my breathing felt funny for awhile. It didn't knock me out though. We all react so differently to meds on here. It depends what other meds we are on etc. I would let the doc know this and run it by the pharmacist to see if there might be and interaction with another med your taking. What works for one doesn't work for everyone.
