Anyone try Neurontin for fibro and does it cause sleepiness?

I have been taking Lyrica for the fibro pain and it has worked great on the pain, but makes me so sleepy that I fall asleep as soon as I get up in the morning.  Not good.  So I have been cutting down on the Lyrica , but of course, the pain came back.  Anyone try Neurontin for fibro and does it cause the same sleepiness side effect as the Lyrica??  Just wondering.

Oh I also take percocet 10/650 but it doesn't help my pain without the Lyrica too.  I have a lot of breakthrough pain.  Please help!!

Linda, I don't take either, but I understand that Neurontin is very similar to Lyrica.  This link below tells you all about it and it does say a side effect is drowsiness and fatigue.  Hopefully others will come along that have taken this.

I tried Neurontin for a month, and I experienced an increase in fatigue and lethargy.  It didn't help enough with the pain to make me want to continue.  I have heard some people say that the side effects were worst when starting Lyrica, and then eased up.  Don't know how long you've been on it - but perhaps things will improve after a bit.  My rheumie did tell me Lyrica and Neurontin were in the same family and based on my reaction to Neurontin, Lyrica wasn't a good bet for me.  I have problems with lots of meds, though.  Hang on and I'm sure others will have more info for you.

Blessings to You Today, rolleyes I hope you can find the relief you need for the painful areas in your body.

You asked about Neurontin. shakehead 've taken up to 2400 mgs a day for several years at a time. I had to go off of it this time as it was one of several meds I was on when my Gastro Paresis flared up. Taking one 300mg Neurontin at bedtime witih Ambien CR allowed me to sleep all night.  I simply slept through the pain. It was always there in the morning with a vengence.

I think the reason it didn't work this last course was because most of my pain now is from Osteo arthritis and bone spurs. NOw that summer is ended pretty much here in the Pacific Northwest I seem to be falling aprart with pain.

I did try the Lyrica earlier this last year but it did nothing for me. I think by that time the pain was in the bones and not muscles.  Neurontin made my brain feel like I was stoned and couldn't think at time. I ususally took 4 5/500 mg Lortab at the time. There was always pain. now I can't take any oral meds because of the Gastro Paresis. 

I hope to be able to reach out to some of you for ideas as I am in so much pain and can hardly leave my home now. I need help but want to help to. I'm new here and don't know what to say at this time except I can't sit any longer so I need to sign off.

Hi, Lilypad, and welcome to the fibromyalgia forum!  It sounds like you are not new to fibro but we still may be able to help.  Check out the Fibro 101 thread...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibromyalgia.  That's a good start.

 

There is a link in there about malic acid/magnesium supplements.  I started taking these last December and they do help me with pain.  Many members have tried them and have had some success, but they don't work for everyone.  You will find that link in the Fibro 101 thread.  Read it and see what you think.

 

Meanwhile, we are here for you.  Ask questions and someone will be along to help you.  We have a great group of people in this forum that really do care.  I'm so glad you joined us and I hope to hear more from you soon.

Welcome Lilypad and thank you for your response. I'm hearing that Neurontin causes the sleepiness just the same as the Lyrica. No sense trading one for another.

Well, I am back taking the Lyrica 50's in the am and about 2 hours after I take it, I fall asleep in my chair and fight to stay awake for the next six hours. I really am anxious for the 25's to get here. I hope I can find a workable combo to fight this pain. I really do need the Lyrica.
