why would my rheumy say that???

Hi everyone:

I was in the hospital a week ago..discharge with no dx.   Saw a rheumy while I was there she told me test will not be in until I was discharge, but all other blood work look fine.

Soo..My neuro told me that they were back.. ANA POSITIVE. Sooo. I called the rheumy she said yes they were but borderline postive...and she doesn't think I have lupus..more fibro.

Okay...saw MY regular doctor today, she told me that my ANA is 1:640 AND my anti-dsDNA is negative and sedrate is 7.   I was dx with fibro about 7 years ago.  So I excepted that and have lived miserly with the pain..all of it..twitches, leg weakness at times, pins and needles feelings,dizziness, balance, pain, weird sensations ,sleep apnea, etc... Even had another child.  My Doctor is good..   I have had 3 MRIs and cat scans, I have seen over 30 docs in the past 7 years (espically neuros) ... including last week. 

Any idea what is going on with me and my ANA?  I want to cry.. I'm sooo frustrated

I don't really have an answer to your question but all medical tests are not foolproof. Many years ago when I was very sick and the doc's had no idea what was wrong..they ran gall bladder tests. Negative...several times. After a few days I literally turned yellow and then they knew it was the gall bladder and took it out. This test is noted for getting a false negative. If your tests are borderline then maybe it's a similar case. Shows something going on when nothing specific is. Ruling out things like Lupus and MS is hard so try to be patient. You don't want them to miss something like that since there are treatments.

Well, the MS is ruled out I think.. Several Mri's etc and a doz neuros.  I will be patient. I have no choice.  Thanks for your feedback.  Appreicate it.

Hi KEO8...I just want to say that one of my sons works with blood and drug research and he has tested ANA's a million times.  Now, I don't want you to take this as 'gospel' but he says it is the most unreliable test you can run. (and expensive...$1000!) Literally, all you need is a hangnail, an infected mosquito bite...the remnents of a cold...and it will come back  positive or borderline positive.  He has run multiple tests on the same person three or four times and they come back different each time.  My doc won't even use the results of an ANA solely for an autoimmune diagnosis.  I don't want you to ignore your doctor and please follow up on what they found in your bloodwork, but just keep in mind that the ANA test is not always reliable.

As far as Fibro is concerned? My first Rhuemy classified it as a 'designer, yuppie disorder.'  I wanted to back over him with a Jeep about three or four times, set him on fire then ask him how he felt...Like a Yuppie with a 'designer' disorder?

Hi! I also had a positive ANA several months ago, but it is now (after being on Plaquenil) negative. My doctors didn't put too much stock in the positive ANA, and I was just recently diagnosed with fibromylagia.
