Welcome, moonmatrix, ibreakhearts66, and Jeni to the fibromyalgia forum! Same with you tmac. I posted in your thread but this post has more info for you. Since I'd be writing about the same things in all of your posts I thought I'd start a thread to welcome all of you at once.
I'm so glad that you found us. You have come to a great place. We have wonderful members that have good ideas to help you live a full and enjoyable life with fibromyalgia. The bonus is that we all really do care about one another.
First of all, fibromyalgia has many of the symptoms of other illnesses. Usually your doctor will run tests to rule out the other illnesses first and then a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is given. May members see a rheumatologist for their fibro. I see a board certified Internist for mine. The important thing is that whatever doctor you go to believes in fibromyalgia! There are doctors out there that still think it's all in our heads. I would suggest that you either look in the yellow pages at the doctor's ad because some times they list the illnesses they treat. Or, you can call the office and ask flat out if the doctor treats patients with fibromyalgia. It's a total waste of time and money if your doctor doesn't believe in fibro and just "humors" you.
Be sure to check out the Fibro 101 thread...the second thread on the forum. There are links to good information about fibro including a list of symptoms, a link called What Else Could It Be?, a link to stretching exercises that really do help, a link called Doctors Respond to New York Times Article (these doctors believe in fibro and are explaining about it....good link!), etc.
Now about pain. Some members need narcotics for their pain. I do not. I use ibuprofen with food and Tylenol for my pain and I also use malic acid/magnesium supplements for pain and fatigue. These don't work for everyone but we have had several members that have had good results with this...including me. There is a link about the supplements in the Fibro 101 thread. It explains all about them and how they work in the body.
Moist heat is wonderful for fibro. Many use a Bed Buddy that gives off moist heat. They can be found in Walgreens and other places. You can make your own, too. Take a tube sock, fill it 2/3's full of raw long grain rice, and tie a knot at the end. You microwave this and it gives off moist heat due to the moisture in the rice!
Keep moving. If you sit or lay too long you will be stiff as a board. Walking is wonderful for you and so is water exercise if you have access to a pool. It is important to pace yourself, though. I know one of you mentioned that you had pain when you walked. Start out slowly and work into length. I started walking my dog for only a few minutes and now I'm walking her one mile a day and we do that mile in about 25 minutes...because she sniffs a lot! LOL You need to pace yourself with housework or anything physical you do. You will see what you can and cannot do because your body will tell you but you can keep trying and get more flexibility so that you can do more without it causing intense pain.
Anyway, read back posts and ask questions. We are here to help you. I'm looking forward to hearing more from all of you soon!
