Hi,

So I have these certification exams I have to take.  There are 4 of them, 3 hours long each.  I'm worried.  Also, 8 am was the only time I could take them ... stupid testing center wouldn't let me schedule them after lunch :(  I'm just a little worried about sitting that long.

Yeh ... just 3 hours of sitting and concentrating seems a big task to handle right now

Dang choc chip!! Are you doing them all at once? Can you take a comfy pillow to sit on? When are the tests? Will send happy thoughts and prayers for you.

I have 4 three hour exams spread the 7th and the 21st of July. Some of the exams are language listening, so those are paced by the recordings, and some of them are reading so if I can read fast then I can get done fast.
Thank good ness I don't have to do them all in one day. But they are at 8 AM!!! That just seems too early to be awake, much less have my brain functioning.
From what I remember, the chairs they have are ok as far as comfort. These are computer based tests, so the chairs are the padded office chair type.
I plan to study my ass off :)

That's an awful time for being up and awake let along taking tests! Yikes! I used to give tests that started at 7:30 but no way I'd take one myself...lol

You might ask if you can get up and walk around outside or in a hallway or something. Just get some movement going. If the school is aware of your physical challenges then they do have to make allowances for you. You can take something from your doc as proof and they are required to make allowances. Taking that first step is the biggest and the hardest! I am very impressed. I have my teaching degree but have been too afraid of how I would do on the exams to take them. Now, I am afraid I have just allowed my fog and depression take over me, you know?

I'm barely conscious at 8:00 am even though I may have been up for an hour, can't imagine being up, dressed and taking a test at the time. Maybe you can go to bed super early those nights.

 

Like Chutz said I would make them aware of your problems cause three hours is a long time to sit for us. I would be squirming like a worm in my chair.

Make a copy of the gentle stretching exercises in the Fibro 101 thread and take them with you.  These are done sitting down so, if you have a part of the body that is really causing you problems, do the appropriate stretch for it.  You might talk to the examiner and let them know you have fibro and that you have to stretch.  Perhaps you can get a desk in the back of the room so you could stand up for a few seconds occasionally.  I won't hurt to ask!

There are ways that people who have illnesses or conditions which effect their abilities during test taking can be modified. If you contact the testing agency and ask for paperwork which your doctor fills out, you may be eligible for some accommodations.

You may need to take longer or more frequent breaks, need testing in a separate room or need to have extra time for the bathrooms.

At least this is possible in the United States under the American Dissabilities act.

I am so glad I attended a grad school which did not require certification exams. However, I have taken the LSAT without accomodations and wish I had. they were pretty stressful.
