Hi folks. 

Just found out my cat has liver cancer.  We'll probably lose him soon.  I'm so sad.  We adopted him when he was 12 years old.  He had been owned by our neighbor, but they were neglecting him, so we took him in.  He's 15 now and has had some health issues for a while - especially kidney disease.  But now he has cancerous tumors all over his liver.  We can try a steroid med like Prednisolone, which might put the cancer into remission for a bit.  But we can't afford chemo, and probably wouldn't do it anyway for a cat this old.  So I have to decide whether I even want to do the Pred, which might slightly delay the inevitable, or just let him go.  I guess we knew when we took him in we wouldn't have him very long, since he was already quite old.  I'm glad we were able to make his last years happy and comfortable.  He spent most of his life outside, being afraid of everything that moved and getting beat up by other animals because he was declawed.  (These people declawed the cat and then put him outside to fend for himself when they "didn't have time for him" anymore.)  The last thing I want is to have him in pain or in fear--he's had enough of that in his life.  Might be best to just put him down before it gets any worse.  Well thanks for letting me vent a little.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your poor cat. How awful it was for those people to declaw him and then throw him outside and how kind it was of you to take him in and nurse him. It sounds like you have a very hard decision to make, but I am sure you will do what is best. Please give your kitty a pat from me and know I will be holding you in my prayers.

What a sweet lady you are! I'm so glad he has been in a loving home these past few yrs, I don't understand the way some ppl treat their pets.

I've had to put down several dogs thru the yrs, never had cats. One dog we had to put down had liver cancer, he got sick on Thurs,  dx on Sat and we had to put him down on Sun. He just went down hill so quickly, we were not prepared - altho I don't know how much time you can really get to 'accept' the loss of a beloved pet.

I know this hard for you and your family, it is never easy. My thoughts and prayers are w/ you all.

Donna, how sad for you. I am truly sorry that your cat is sick and you may lose him soon. There don't seem to be very many people who will take in an older animal. I am glad you are someone who will. He was fortunate to have you these last three years.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.  It's good to have supportive friends.  Toby went to kitty heaven this morning. I am both sad and relieved. With medication and force feeding he improved for a bit, but he made a definite turn for the worst last night and I took him to the vet this morning. The house seems so empty without a kitty in it. 

Oh, Donna, I'm so sorry about Toby.     I've been there and it's horrible.  But you did the right thing and he doesn't hurt anymore.  You have been a wonderful Mom to him.  You will be in my prayers.
