I just wondered if any of you plan to get the swine flu vaccine, if there is enough for people outside of the high risk guidelines?

I just got the regular flu shot but I understand the swine flu vaccine will be 2 shots.  I thought that the last time there had been a few problems (back in the late 70's) with the swine flu vaccine.  I'm sure it will be safe but it seems like they are having to rush to get it ready.

Personally, I will probably not be getting the Swine Flu vaccine unless my doctor highly suggests it.  I always get the seasonal flu vaccine and I rarely get sick during flu season.

I heard Dr. Rosenfeld last week talk about this on television.  He said that it is far more important to get the seasonal flu vaccine than it is the Swine Flu vaccine.  He said that there are far more people that die from the seasonal flu.  People do get sick with the Swine Flu but he said it didn't seem to be nearly as bad as the seasonal flu.  Also, just a few days ago I heard that they haven't even tested the swine flu vaccine!  So I guess we need to keep watching and listening to our doctors....not the media.  They love to blow things out of proportion!

That's kind of what I was thinking.  I got the regular flu shot yesterday.  My doctor said swine vaccine wasn't ready yet and they are "rushing" to get it ready.  I'd rather it be tested a lot before I got it. No pun intended but I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig. :-)

I agree with Sherrine.  I don't get any of the flu shots because they discovered I am allergic to something in the preparation...the suspect the eggs.  But the swine flu vaccine has not had enough trial studies to insure it's saftey, in my opionion.  My son is a biologist and worked on the bird flu vaccine for two years and even then, it wasn't ready for the public.  Then the virus mutated, which happens to many of the flu viruses out there.  I think the media should stay out of medicine...but again...that's just my opinion.

I don't plan on getting the vaccine. I don't get vaccines. I tend to not get vaccines. I don't know whether or not I will get my son the shots or not. The swine flu is in our county, but I'm not too concerned about it. I try not to freak out about this stuff because there's nothing anyone can really do about it being here, why freak out about it?

   It must be a local thing as I had the flu shot a few years ago and had such a reaction I could barely walk.

I thought about borrowing one from work just to get around. I know I'm not allergic to eggs as I have them

nearly every day. I have to sign a waver every year so I don't have to get them at work. After that I'm

kinda scared of them  shakehead

THe swine flu is being tested here in seattle on children and adults. As soon as it is ready for distribution, my doctor will send me a letter telling me to come in and get one. Fibromyalgia put me on the first list for all flu vaccines. I will receive both the H1N1 and this years flu shot.

H1N1 is a rapidly mutating virus and a vaccine will not necessarily be effective. The vaccine may help prevent one strain of H1N1 from making you sick, but will not protect against any other strains you may encounter. The first wave of H1N1 was mild and, if H1N1 performs like every other pandemic flu virus, the next wave that World Health organization is predicting for this winter will be much more severe and your vaccination may not be effective. Just something to keep in mind. I personally am a wary consumer when it comes to vaccines. And I'm absolutely fascinated by pandemics. The "second wave" of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic wiped out whole villages in Alaska in a very short time, causing great cultural grief. I am interested to see the impact of H1N1.

I work in health care,  and really the most effective thing you can do to not get the flu is to stay away from people you know are ill; and wash your hands very frequently with soap and water. You should be able to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" if you wash your hands properly - turn off the tap with a paper towel if you are in a public lav, and use a paper towel to open the door. I also avoid shaking hands and use a lot of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Did you know we touch our faces on average 200x each day? You can get sick by touching your face, rubbing your eyes or nose, etc. with unwashed hands. Happy hand washing!

Thanks for the great advice, Littleneck!  Also, cough into your sleeve if you have to cough.  I never had heard of that before but have heard it many times in the past month.  I pray everyone stays healthy and this doesn't become a pandemic.

One of my friends works in epidemiology (tracking illnesses) and goes to the elementary schools teaching kids how to stay healthy with handwashing, and coughing and sneezing into their sleeves. She is really likeable and the kids started calling it "doing the Dracula thing," which we all started saying now.

And if your hands get dry from too much handwashing, run them under hot hot water, coat them with Vaseline and sleep with cotton gloves or socks on. That's an Alaska woman trick!

    If they are "Testing" this vaccine on kids and adults do they even have any idea of the side effects?

Either short or long term? The more I read about "Man Made" medicine the more I am against it. I've

been on it for 30 years now and will hopefully be off it mostly for the rest of my life. I just hope If there

is ever a need that I can find a holistic nursing home.

I NEVER get the flu shot and I also never get the flu. Is there a connection between always getting the vaccine and sometimes getting sick anyway? I think I have a natural immunity to whatever causes the common flu.

 

So why should I ask for trouble now at age 60? I am in good health, and if I get the swine flu I get it. But,  I will not be one of those people going out infecting others. I will be home sick and confined.

 

So far swine flu  has been very mild except in extreme cases of very young children and people with ashma or other health problems that caused this flu to be more dangerous FOR THEM.

 

Yes,  it is being rushed and I don't care for that at all. Many people ended up with chronic fatigue syndrome after the last time they rushed a vaccine at us in the 70s.

 

Is there mercury in these vaccines? That is what I would like to know.

 Even one congresswoman said--"I don't get it. What is the big panic going on here?"

 

It takes a long time to make sure a vaccine is safe and does not cause more harm than good. Have they had time to test it properly? No one can say for sure.

 

It  always mutates anyway. Both my sisters are teachers and get the flu shot every year. And every year they get the flu anyway. Now one has fibromyalgia and the other one has rheumatoid arthritis. I never have had that vaccine in my body and I have none of that and i am older than they are.

 

My mother who was happy and alert until 76 started getting the flu shot at age 68. Now she is 80 and has dementia and is in Assisted Living.  I fear there could be a connection but I also could be wrong. It's a crap shoot isn't it, knowing what to do?

 

Basically, if you are afraid of the flu  then get the shot.  But I would choose one or the other, common flu or swine vaccine. Not both.

Well, I heard another doctor this morning saying that the swine flu is much milder than the seasonal flu...at least so far.   

Yes, the swine flu vaccine does have mercury in it BUT, you can request the version that doesn't have mercury, since there is concern that mercury has caused some cases of autism.  Makes me wonder why they didn't make all of it without mercury!   confused   

I'll be getting my seasonal flu shot in October.  I had never gotten the shot but one winter I did get the flu and, trust me, you don't want it!  So, I started getting the flu shots regularly...since 1999 and haven't gotten the flu at all.  I've only gotten three colds during that period, too, so for me it works well.  But, I am not planning on getting the swine flu shot.  Fibro isn't supposed to be an immune problem and I have no problems with my lungs so I think I'm good!

Donnaeil, reread your post dear. We with fibro fog knew what you meant. It's funny how leaving out one word can change the meaning of things. devil

 

I'm one of those that have never gotten a flu shot and have never had bad flu but the older and weaker I get the more scared I get about getting the flu. What to do, what to do??? My sister got a shot one year and got very sick from it. With my medphobia I have a fear of all meds except what I have been on before the phobia got so bad. I asked DH if he was going to get one and he doesn't know either. He heard one of the docs on TV but I don't know which one talking about the swine flu shot too. We always wash our hands after being out and have sanitizer all over the house. I never touch my face when I'm out in public.

 

Does anyone know if you can buy those wall mounted sanitizer holders for the home???

Marlee, years ago people could get the flu from the flu shot because they used a tiny bit of live virus in the vaccine.  But, now they don't do that.  You can't get the flu from the vaccine.  Now, if you already have the virus in your system and you happen to get the shot and then get the flu, you would have gotten the flu anyway...without the shot.  I think that's what confuses people.  I have a friend who will never get the flu shot and she is sick all winter long.  The last couple of years when I got my shot, I didn't even have any tenderness in my arm.  I just got protection.

Around 20 years ago my mom badgered me into getting a flu shot. My husband and both sons got VERY sick with the flu on New Year's Eve. I was just fine. I used to get the flu a lot. I've gotten the shot every year for 20 years and haven't had the flu since. I really think it works. As for the swine flu, I'm really more worried about my children than myself. Diane

I know about half of the people in my department that got the flu shot got sick. Alot of them were people

who don't get sick. Working in health care we're required to get it or sign off. Like I said, I got so sick with

my arthritis "flare" that I couldn't barely walk. The seniors with their walkers were faster than me. I was told

that they had never seen a reaction like that before.

Then the burning question is......if they know mercury can HURT you, why on God's green earth would you

put it in something that people, and especially the very sick and children, would use? I know the

drug manufacturers like their money but that is going too far by knowingly putting people at risk.

last year was the first year that i didn't get the regular flu shot after i heard what the ingredients of the shot were. i never got the flu. yet, when i used to get the flu shot i would get severly ill with the flu. i'm on the fence about the h1n1 vaccination, but am leaning towards not getting it.

I will come into as someone who is goin out of winter and having had the swine flu.

Here everyone who is expecting a baby is going to be asked to have the injection as we have found that it is sometimes deadly to the developing baby. Also anyone with a under lying illness is also at risk.

We where visiting my sister in law in a tourist town and they had all become ill quite badly and had not told us this when they knew we were going to visit to pick my mother in law up to bring her home I sat for four hours in a car with someone who had it.

I became sick almost straight away and it was not pleasant I would tell anyone who has the chance to have the injectio to have it, especally if they have an underlying illness.

I have had the flu injection since i first got Fibro and I have never nor has anyone in my family got since since and they now laugh at others who get sickbecause as they say with one injection they could miss out on that. my mother had a injection one year and was ill only to give it a miss the following year to get very sick. She is now the first in line to get the injection.

We now get it long before winter sets in the end og March here, winter starts in June and becuse we get it at the same time every year they tell us we are building up a lot bigger imunity.

So for my family they will be standing in line to get the swine flu injection. They are running tests also here in Australia and we will be getting the injections from the middle of October I think.

it has been awhile since i have been on, as i have been getting my personal life in order.

 

I heard a dr on TV last week saying that NO PATIENT with fibromyalgia should get the swine flu vaccine. I called my dr

and he agreed that the side effects could be devasting.  Thats all I had to hear, and thats from two drs. But my PCP did say to get the seasonal flu shot, which I will, and have never had any

problems with it.

I also heard a doctor on the news just yesterday say that no one with fibro or any kind of neurological disorder should get the swine flu vaccine.  It has TWENTY times the mercury in it than most vaccines.  He, by the way, is on the panel that is developing the vaccine.

I heard a dr on the t.v. say he would not give the shot to his own children.  He doesn't think its been tested enough.  I also saw an interview with college students who have already had the swine flu.  Most said it was just like a bad cold and only lasted a few days.  I thought I heard a doctor also who said that people with fibromyalgia should not get it.  I did get the regular flu shot but I know now that I won't get the swine flu shot.

Do either of you happen to remember where you saw the doctor (or his name) talking about fibromites not getting the H1N1 vaccine?  I'd really like to get some more info. on it.

 

I've gotten the regular seasonal vaccine for several years and have never had a problem.  I've also not had the flu since I started getting it, so I do plan to get it again this year.

 

I'm still on the fence about the swine flu vaccine.  I'm concerned about the rush to make it available.  Also, what is up with the mercury?  Does the swine flu vaccine have more than other vaccines? Do other vaccines not contain any?

Hey Austen...this doctor was on Fox News yesterday but I don't remember his name.  He blames the media for giving this strain of Swine too much air  time and as he claims to have been following its progression across the country, and it is weakening.  He said that the potential side effects from the vaccine  will put more people at risk for becoming ill and even dying than getting the flu.  And what IS with all the mercury?  You can't even put mercury in a thermometer anymore but you can use it as an agent in a vaccine?  Maybe you can get on the Fox homepage and see if they have an info on this doctor, or a you tube video of his broadcast. 

However, there are so many opinions on this subject and this was just another doctor stating his.

This dr was on CNN last week. He said too many neurological problems could develop if given to a Fibro patient.  You might go CNN or Fox news website and check their health depart. I dont remember his name, but I believe he was with a prominent hospital on the east coast.  I just went for my flu shot at CVS and asked the Phys Asst and she said the exact same thing.  She also said they will NOT give the swine vaccine to people in their late fifties, sixties or seventies.

I told her I had the swine flu vaccine back in 1976 and she said I probably have built up an immunity to it anyways.  But she said it is so experimental she will not have her school age children take it.  Too much mercury, and made too fast.  She believes we will see more people with side effects than the swine flu, and they could be long lasting effects.

So, that really makes me wonder what these kids are going to be injected with.  Feel bad for moms of young children and pregnant women.
