Just realized that Magnesium was helping my nausea from Savella

I started taking magnesium with Savella when I first started taking Savella because of a fast heart rate. I didn't realize at the time that it was helping my nausea. I stopped taking magnesium because I kept forgetting to take it and that's when the nausea came back. I've been taking it again at night before bed and it is helping a whole lot. I have no clue why it is helping...maybe because it relaxes the body, but I am so glad that is it helping. I will keep taking Savella and see what happens. I do not want to take Lyrica. Having edema and muscle pain from a medication just sounds crazy to me.

What exactly is Savella suppose to do? Is it like a stimulant? I wondered because you said that you had a fast heartrate. It has sounded like a good medication so far. I have lived with nausea before and it doesn't bother me as long as it isn't a lot. Let me know a little about it if you would. I am getting interested in trying it. Does it help with the pain?

Hey Karen,

Savella is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), similar to some drugs used for the treatment of depression and other psychiatric disorders. So far, it is only approved to treat Fibromyalgia and not depression. In my case, I have not noticed any change in my attitude. The fast heart rate is listed as a serious side effect, but my Rheumatoligist didn't seemed concerned. That only happened a few times. He did say it would increase my energy, which it did at the beginning, but not as much anymore. I think the energy increase has something to do with the way it works in the brain. I am still not on the highest mg yet, so I don't think I am experiencing all of the benefits it could give me.

It decreases my muscle pain and that horrible intense pain I used to get. It has gotten me moving around again. Before, I was mostly stuck in bed. It seems to have puttered out a little for me but I think if I increase the dosage, I will benefit more from it. I don't think I am ready to throw in the towel just yet.

I had to drop out of the clinical trial for Savella (milnacipran) because it increased my heart rate and blood pressure. My resting pulse rate is normally in the 60's but the Savella increased it to around 120 beats/minute. It also increased my blood pressure by a lot. I don't remember exactly but it was somewhere around 160/100. I was (and still am) taking magnesium so there wasn't much else I could do to lower the blood pressure and heart rate without taking more medicine. Since I was in a trial, I couldn't lower the dose. I didn't have any nausea from it but I did get some intense hot flashes.

Milnacipran has been used in Europe for years to treat depression. It was just approved for use here last year. It's one of the few meds that does not cause most people to gain weight, in fact, many people lose weight while on it.

I already take an snri, so I don't know if it would make much difference for me. I take pristiq. I might not even be able to take the two together. Due to seratonin syndrome or something like that. Being that I am already on the pristiq. But I might still ask the doctor about it. I will let you all know.

There's a decent list of meds that cause serotonin syndrome on wikipedia. The link pops up near the top if you google "serotonin syndrome." I seem to get it when mixing just about anything with tramadol. Since that is my only working pain killer, I mostly don't take other drugs.

I'm so glad that you found out that the magnesium helps with the nausea. It would
of been a shame to have to quit something that has been helpful to you. I know that
I'm glad that Savella has also helped me. Your discovery will help others who might
of given up hope. Thanks for sharing!
