What constitutes a flare? I am trying to figure out if I am in one. I hurt and am sore. I was in the hospital overnight last mon with chest pains and the dr said it was fibro and costochondritis. I can't tell if I am sore because of activity or am in a flare. Sorry but can anyone help me out? How do you know if you are in a flare and can you tell how long it will last.

I guess it just depends what you consider a flare. If I know I have overdone and have more pain than usual, then I chalk it up to overdoing. If I haven't done anything strenuous and end up having a lot of pain, then I consider it a flare. But either way, I really don't care! All I know is I hurt!

I have bouts of costo, too. Not fun. Hope it stays away from you for a very long time.

If my pain is bad enough that I have to take a Darvocet, I consider it a flare.

I consider a flare as... my pain level is higher, more intense than the normal day
to day pain. My flares are caused by emotional or physical stress(overdoing) and
differant weather fronts, any drastic change like rain or humidity...cold. Then there
are days I don't know what caused them...the out of the blue flares.

No matter what the cause... flares really hurt. I cut my activity level down, but still
exercise and do what I can to help...like heat...using my bedbuddies, soaking in a
hot bath. I do gentle stretching and relaxation therapy. When I am flaring I will take
muscle relaxers ...flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) and it really helps take the edge off pain
but also makes you drowsy.
