Never knew an ultra sound could hurt so bad

I had to go for an ultra sound today on my heart for my check up next week.

My ribs and the bone surrounding my breasts are one of my most tender spots. I can't stand for someone to poke me or touch my ribs .

So having the ultra sound done was painful.
I am so sore that I can barely touch my chest bone or my ribs, especially under and to the side of my left breast.

I was on my side on the table for an hour.
They have to use a lot of pressure when doing the ultrasound to make sure that they get a good picture.
When I was done, I was close to tears.
My chest and stomach was so red it looked like I had a bad sunburn.

I feel your pain, i have had heart ultrasounds many times and they are the worse , the pain is so bad i can barely stand it and i am sore for days i feel bruised. my chest bones are the worse for me too. i can barely stand the cat to lay on my chest. i hope you feel beter soon

Im sorry you are in so much pain today EML, I have never had to have a heart ultra sound thankfully because I am very tender there too. I will be praying that you feel better tomorrow.

I can still barely touch my left side/rib cage.
I wouldn't be surprised if I had a bruise tomorrow.
I took a long hot bath and bit ago and it helped to relax me some but I am still very sore.

Friday I have to go for an MRI with contrast. I hope it's not as bad.

I went through the same thing. The tech that was doing the ultra sound was very careful and took his time. I guess he was taking too long because another tech that had been there longer, came in with an attitude, blowing and everything. She pulled the metal piece on the bed and it flew down real hard. She never apologised for that. I kept telling her that it hurt really bad to please go slower and not press so hard. She didn't listen. When I tell you I was about to knock her out...it was very close. I was gonna call and complain the next day but I started thinking about it and didn't want to burn any bridges in case I had to go back there again. Anyway, I know what you went through. I was told I had costochondritis. If that is what it is, it hurts really bad. I hope you feel better soon:)

Not much better today. Very sore and I can barely touch that side. It even is uncomfortable wearing a bra today. I couldn't sleep on that side at all last night.

I have Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease
My first doctor had diagnosed me with Mitral Valve Prolapse. He passed away a couple years ago and I started seeing his son. He did some other testing and diagnosed me with the Aortic valve thing and said it wasn't mitral valve prolapse.

I'm sorry that you had such an awfu time with your ultra sound and that the tech was so rude. That is just uncalled for. The girl that did mine was very nice and patient. I never said a word or complained. I figured if I kept my mouth shut it would be over sooner. But I knew she had to press a little hard to get a good picture. Just never dreamed it would take that long.
But if my tech had been as rude as yours, I think I would've knocked her out. LOL

That sounds like costochondritis to me.  I have that and it can be quite painful.  My doctor has me taking Ibuprofen with food to help ease the discomfort.  There is a link about costochondritis in Fibro 101.  See if that sounds like what is going on.  Sorry you feel so tender.

I went and checked that out and yep, that sounds like I have it.
I printed it off and will be taking that with me next week to my doctor visit along with the long list of the other things I want to discuss with him. :D

Wow...I can sure relate to this. I went to ER last year for a very intense chest pain. It was just to the right side of my breast bone so wasn't sure what to think but after it wouldn't go away, and had happened so suddenly I figured I better get it checked out. They did the heart ultrasound too and wow was it painful. All of this mind you was prior to finding out about Fibro. When it happened we had just gotten the call that they didn't expect my mother in law to make it thru the night. I had no clue stress and crying could flare it up so bad. They said it was costochondritis. Unfortunatley for treating this and fibro in general they do suggest IBU...and I can't take any oral anti-inflammatories since having my lap-band. I will have to go read the link in 101...I may have missed it. Now the dr seems to think it goes hand in hand with fibro and I should just expect flare ups. He is right since I had another stress induced one over the weekend when my brother had a diabetic crash while we were camping. Uhg...my body does not like stress and fear....AT ALL.

hi, i can totally relate to your pain. i also had a heart scan last year and befor it i explained to the person doing it (sorry i dont know what these people are called) that my chest and ribs were very sore all the time and i cant lay on my side. i was very lucky to have someone who was very understanding and he helped put pillows under me and at the side of me. he also took his time doing the scan it took about 45mnts also he was very gentle and kept asking if i was ok and comfortable enough. i was very grateful as i cant even were a bra without it causing me pain. id advise anyone getting a scan or any test to explain just how tender they feel and how much pain theyr in befor the test as you never no it might just make all the difference. you might just be lucky enough to get someone who understands, i do no not many people do unfortunatly !!

iv to go for another heart scan soon and im hoping and praying i get someone the same as the last time cause if i didnt id honestly need to stop the person doing the scan if they were hurting me. im so sorry to hear you are still sore i do hope the pain gets easier soon.maybe a heat pad that you stick to your clothes might help. just a thought

I'm sorry for all that you are going through with your fibro and your family.
I don't handle stress very well either. :D
But I'm trying.
My BIL, which is really more like my brother just went through a surgery and had his entire stomach removed so that was very stressful. But he is doing much better.

I'm glad you had someone good to do your test. I didn't mention it to the technician while she was doing it but I will if I have to get one done again.
I was just grinning and bearing it.
I'm still a tad sore on the top of my left breast.
Then I had to go in Friday for an MRI.
So my body was very stressed out.
I'm still trying to recover from it all.

I just bought a new heating blanket from QVC when they were having a clearance sale. I may have to go ahead and get it out. :D

Eml...thank you so much. It is hard and I know I have to learn how to handle my stress better. I am really bad about trying not to cry...and that hurts worse than just letting it out. I am sorry you are going through your own bunch of stress but glad to hear his surgery went well. That sounds like a very invasive surgery so I can only assume there were alot of problems leading up to having it. Hopefully it will help him and all of you as well. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
