Back spasm - how to deal?

It's been so long since I've had one of these that I need advice on how to handle it.  I pushed myself too much over the weekend, and then suddenly it was like the plates shifted, and I can't move beyond a certain point or it zaps me bad!  smhair   I've taken Vicodin twice today, which helps, and I've been moving around some, but now other back muscles are starting to complain because I have to walk so lopsided.  I'm used to my normal fibro pain, but this is different. 

My doctor said I could take Flexeril with Vicodin, but I hate to load up so much on drugs.  Has anyone taken them together?

Debbie, the Flexeril or Baclofen will help. I hope you find a good combination. I also take Magnisium now with my Medication.

I wish I had a little pain killer myself. You might try and find a good Chiropractor and get X-rays or CT scan or an MRI to make sure there isn't something else there in your back. Talk to your DR about it.

Sorry Debbie that your back is bothering you now. I know how much it meant to you when you were able to take care of your dog on your own. I will be praying that your back feels better soon.

Debbie sorry that your back went on you. When my back goes out like that I go to the chiro and he always insists on ice to take the swelling down. I then switch to heat but I don't tell him that. I don't like going to the family doctor because the prednisone (for swelling) and vicodan just take too long and the back is still out anyway.

Debbie, I'm sorry your back is out of whack...I know how much that hurts. I was
on a vicodin, fexeril combo for quite a while prior to my back surgery. The
muscle relaxant does help with the spasms. I used to visit a chiropractor on a
regular basis to be realigned. Is one hip higher than the other? You may need an
adjustment. Hope you feel better soon! Sending prayers and very gentle hugs!

I am in a spasm right now. So sorry you are too. Really hurts. I'm taking Soma for them, and it helps a lot, but can make you tired. But good to have if one flairs up. I tried a chiropractor, and they did more damage to my back yet. Approach with caution. Stretches and exercise from the physical therapy help a lot as well. Hang in there, maybe take it slow, and take a good old hot bath or shower, and try to keep the stress level low.

When looking for a chiro I have found out to ask the question "Do you use a drop table or an activator?" The drop tables put me in bad shape, but my chiro is very old fashioned and uses the activator method combined with gentle massage. It is truly a miracle! I have also found that when I am having a back spasm going into the childs pose (yoga) and staying in that position for a while relieves the tension. You may not feel like doing it, but once you get started you will see why I recommend it. I am sorry your back has started bothering you and I hope you feel better soon!

Sorry your back is hurting so bad! I was having problems a couple months ago. Going to the chiropractor made it worse. The doctor recommended a massage therapist. They day after my massage appointment I was in a good amount of pain but the next day I felt so much better! And I did take vicodin for it at first but it wouldn't touch the pain so they gave me flexeril too and it helped. Hope you feel better!

I have always been prescribed diazepam 1-2 mg for back spasms. They put me to sleep the first couple of times I took them, like Flexeril does, but now just take away the spasms.

I went to a chiropractor once and will never go again. It made things much worse. It's contraindicated for arthritis and bulging discs as I found out.

It was just a suggestion about the Chiro. I didn't say it was for everyone.

Thanks, everyone. I am finally going to my chiropractor today because my back has really fixated in a bad position. It does make me nervous, but I've been doing it for years, and it usually helps. Also been using Vicodin and Flexeril some the last couple of days. I hate that these drugs make me feel dizzy and even more out of it, and also the idea that I'll become immune to them. I may switch back to my usual Darvocet (it's a little weaker) though I have the same fears about it, long-term.

Our crazy Dylan (dog) has opened up his wound AGAIN (5th time!!) and will have to be put under and re-stitched tomorrow morning. Yesterday we were so upbeat about it - the vet looked at him and said his stitches looked beautiful, and we didn't need to keep the bandage over it anymore and he could probably have all the stitches out on Monday. This morning he had torn his t-shirt open and the wound was bloody in the middle. Who knows how long it'll be now!

One thing for sure, I can't be the one to do the major holding and changing the bandage. Tried that, and that's how I got this nasty spasm.

wow Deb I am so sorry about Dylan, I thought for sure this time was going to work with you doing so much to take care of him. I hope the dr. can come up with something that will finally get him better. You are in my prayers my friend.
