Hi~
My mother took a nasty fall when she was near 80 years old. She fractured several ribs and I can tell you the pain was unbelievably horrid! She couldn't take a normal breath without awful pain. This is a woman who was always strong and never gave in to pain unless it was extreme. She was quite thin at the time she broke her ribs and that might have added to her pain...I'm not sure on that one. But she did have to go into a nursing home for several weeks until she could manage to dress and take care of her daily chores of dressing and bathing. She was on slow release pain med's for several months and didn't like it one bit.
I found some information on the Webmd.com website. (Webmd is the health care site for the National Institute of Health)
Hope this helps and that you heal fast!

"A rib fracture is a crack or break in one of the bones of the rib cage. A break in the thick tissue (cartilage) that connects the ribs to the breastbone may also be called a fractured rib, even if the bone itself is not broken.
The most common cause of a fractured rib is a direct blow to the chest, often from a car accident or a fall. Coughing hard can also fracture a rib. This is more likely to happen if you have a disease that has made your bones weak, such as osteoporosis or cancer.
It is important to see a doctor after a rib injury. A blow that is hard enough to fracture a rib could also injure your lungs, spleen, blood vessels, or other parts of your body."
