I went to my rheumy again today. I haven't seen him since last year. We don't have to many where I live, so if anyone knows of a good one in central Va please let me know. He basically had a euphamism for everything I said or how I felt about what I have. Oh he went on about how a car and motor wouldnt work if blahahah, and something about a stupid bowl of cold water!!! I told him I am worse, and getting that sick feeling when I over do it. He says thats not fibro. I told him I was finished with my b12 shots and said I had a LITTLE more energy, then he asked, well did your GP tell you this would happen, and he said all that is, is endorphins!! He says he believes all of what I say, but that I need to exercise, take medicine, and strengthen my muscles.  ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! He wants me to take lyrica. I refused to take it last year. I don't want no stinkin lyrica! lol. To many side effects for to many people. I told him it will make me gain weight, and he said no, the people that gain weight from it are depressed and eat more!!! He had a story for everything. I seriously do believe that he REALLY does not believe in fibro. He did the pressure point test and barely felt me and said I don't have any cords in my muscles, and said how do you know you barely touched me!, he said my hip pain with pressure points is really bursitis, I don't think so, they feel just like my other tender spots. He made me look like I am not as bad as I feel. Sorry I am totally mad and frustrated with trying to make people believe, esp a md of what I have. I give up on doctors. They misdiagnosed my sister at the age of 36, and about 8 months later she died of stage 4 cancer! and they didn't even find it until they wanted to remove a cyst, then it was to late. Im in the health field too. lol SIck of ALL of it.

I'm sorry about this doc.  I have had my share of rotten docs too, and it is very frustrating.

I can tell you of one of my docs.  My PCP sent me to an endocrindologist with elevated antibodies.  That endo took one look at me and told e there was nothing wrong with me.  When I asked about the elevated antibodies, he says to me, "Just because your antibodies are elevated doesn't mean you have thyroid issues, just because you have a uterus doesn't mean you are pregnant!"  I feel that remark was totally out of order, I don't care if he is a doctor or not.  I was very upset that day.

We just have to weed out the bad docs and try and find the roses among the thorns.  I turly believe I have found 4 roses among the thorns, finally.

I had a bad appointment today too :( The nurse had put in he computer I have fibro so as soon as the doctor came in he gave be a long speech about how he will not give me narcotics and how fibros are drug seekers.
There are few rhuemies where I live too - north east PA, small mountain village with 35 people. I was up all night in pain again last night so about 3 AM I hit my insurance company's website looking for a different rhuemie (one I had kicked me out some time ago because lyrica did not work) - couldn't find one in my county or 2 neighboring counties! So looks like I am paying out of pocket.
If you find a really good rhumie let me know - VA is very pretty and I have a VCR player in the van for the kids ;) Of course gas would be a killer :P

I live in Northern Delaware. I have a wonderful Rheumy. I wouldn't mind sharing him with all of you. Just let me know when? P.S. His receptionist is absolutely wonderful too.

I had a terrific one in NW PA. Now, in southside central Virginia, I really dislike mine. I am looking to switch, as well, and plan to do some research after the semester ends and graduation occurs.

It doesn't sound like your doctor is listening to you.  He has already determined what he would say.  He probably says this to all the fibro patients.  But, the real problem is, they really don't know how to help us except for drugs and narcotics.  Many of us don't want to do that.  He could be right about your hips, though.  I have hip pain and my doctor pressed on the side of my thighs and I about went through the roof.  Bursitis.  It's a symptom of fibro so you both are right!  smilewinkgrin

 

I know I hate going to the doctor because either they don't know what is wrong or they do know and really can't help me...unless I'm willing to take a ton of medication.  I'm sick of all the tests, too, so I don't go unless I think there is something terribly wrong.  That's not the best idea but I've been there and done that with tests and doctors.

It's funny when docs are surprised at how many docs we've been to - gee...can't imagine why :) I've been told I was lucky to live in America cuz if I lived in some other country, I'd be begging in the streets (I'm on SSD). We should put together a list of the worst things docs have said to us and publish the thing.

I left my doc too. His np is the one who diagnosed me, and when it came to see him again all I got was attitude. 

As for the lyrica...Stay away. I tried it, and it lasted one week. I was so sick and out of my mind.  If you don't agree with the docs they seem to get mad at you. Having FM I think you learn about your body really well, and more than the average person. The lyrica cost me over a hundred dollars and I threw it away.

Like today, went to the walk in for sinus infection, and the nurse said "oh i love when you all diagnose yourselves". I wanted to say, "I get 5 to 6 sinus infections a year, and know what they feel like". She tried to tell me it was allergies. well now my huband is sick, and I dont think I can pass allergies to him. Being I dont even have allergies. Sorry she really made me mad.

I think I have seen about 8 doctors before finally finding the right doctor to treat me. I find with the rheumatologists they only want to prescribe anti inflammatory medications like Mobic, celebrex or anti-seizure medications like Lyrica and Neurontin or Anti-depressants like Cybalta, Elvail or Savella. Unfortunately the pain that I was experiencing could not be solved by a few extra strength motrin. Luckily this doctor referred me to an anesthesiologist certified in pain management(and fibromyalgia seems to be on of his specialties). Pain Management specialists DO treat fibromyalgia pain since fibromyalgia IS a VERY real condition, with MANY treatment options. Unfortunately it's not a one size fits all treatment and I had to have MANY med trials until we could find a combination that worked. So keep looking...the right doctor is out there....and if push comes to shove sometimes you might need a few extra pills to get to through the hard flares. Muscle relaxers can be a live saver during flares.

I feel everyone's frustration!!! It isn't easy.  After years of pain and my doctor sending me to different places like PT and the rhemotologist.  I went back to tell him that I was dx with fibro.   His statement "they dx everyone with that".  So dismissive.  I wish I had more guts back then I would have asked him, so what is it from since you don't believe in fibro?  Instead I left him.

Next doc.  I tried to talk to him about a low libido (god forbid a woman brings this up to a male doc!) I thought it was from the birth control pills.  He nearly ran out of the room from uncomfort, then he referred me to a shrink saying basically "it's all in your head".  Which it wasn't because when I switched birth control I felt better.

Now I have a doc that specializes in fibro and uses integrated medicine (western, supplements, nutrition, etc).  But I still feel like he dismisses and doesn't totally listen (he answers emails on his blackberry while I am speaking to him!!!).

Maybe they all took a class in how to be dismissive to their patients.  Seems like they all got an A in class!
