I work as a checker at a grocery store. They have been wonderful to accomidate me. They let me sit on a stool to check when my legs get tired. I took a leave of absence to student teach. When I returned they told me I could not use the stool and if I could not stand to check I could not work. They said they have a new HR person and this is the rule. I need a job until I get hired to teach. This doesn't seem right or legal to me. Any advice? cry

I would check with HR and let them know that you were previously allowed to use a stool and don't understand why the change. If there's a hand book check in it and see if there's anything that would apply to your sisuation.
You may also want to call your local labor board and ask them.

Yeah, and see if you can get a doctor's note, they definitely can't fire you for sitting down if it's medically necessary however, I'm sure it'd be difficult for you to do that knowing their disapproval.

Hi and welcome to the Fibro Family!

I did some digging and found a site that might help you. It's the government site for the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). I would think your employer would have to accommodate you under these provisions but you would need to read what the ADA considers 'disabled' to see if you can make your employer comply.

It sounds like the majority of people who have been diagnosed with Fibro and have continued with their doctor or have been treated for fibro would qualify. Here's the site with the information. I hope it helps...

When I was still working I had to get a form from HR for the doc to fill out. It was called something along the lines of "reasonable accommadation form" to get a special chair

I beleive FM is considered a disability were they have to provide any "tools" to help you complete your job

I have inflammatory arthritis and fibro. I filled out FMLA paperwork a couple of weeks ago. When the HR contact was talking to me, she asked if I needed a printer on my desk or needed to get up and move around more, etc. I told her I needed to get up form my desk from time to time to keep from getting so stiff. She mentioned the company would make "reasonable accomodations" because of the ADA act. I guess she considers me disabled...
