I was wondering... Since they have never yet found a definite cause for Fibro, could it be that something either Physical or psychological 'triggers' fibro? Just a thought but i don't know maybe it could make sense...

I've had both a mental and physical problem just before my symptoms started beeing a) Falling several feet in a football stadium landing with my lower back on a row of seats (After wich i was declared perfectly healthy after several x-rays) and b) A massive nervous breakdown followed by depression and obsessive/compulsive episodes.

I wonder if any of you have a similar experience, that something bad happend around the time it started for you?

I was under a lot of physical and mental stress when mine started. Also a recent loss of my first husband to cancer. So I think that had a lot to do with my fibromyalgia. My sister is reading a book right now, I can't remember the name. But in the book they believe that all of our illnesses is from our subconscious needing to heal. This is interesting to me as I know emotional and mental stress can cause a lot of our illnesses. When I was in my 20's I became a diabetic because of stress going on in my family. After the stress was relieved, I was doing good. But during the stress, I was really sick. So I do think a traumatic event or mental stress can trigger fibromyalgia. I am interested to see what others have to say about this.

I sure wish I knew what causes fibro.  I wasn't having any problems and was merrily living my life.  It hit me while watching television.  Go figure.

 

Some have had accidents, viruses, trauma, etc. that seemed to trigger the fibro.  I think it's in our system and decides to rear it's ugly head out of the blue.  Then we all sit around scratching our heads trying to figure out how this happened to us.

 

I've had Crohn's disease since I was a toddler but no one knew what was going on back then.  I had problems and then cleared up and then it hit me with a vengence when I turned 30.  But,  you see, it was in my system and wasn't detected and then, BAM!, it arrived.  The same thing happened with my hearing problem.  Anyway, I'm just guessing like everyone else.  I hope they figure this out soon, though.

I believe I had chronic fatigue for about 2 years and then was in a motor vehicle accident and all the pain started and hasn't gone away. I believe the accident caused the CFS to "morph" into fibro. I have yet to find a helpful, knowledgeable doctor who is willing to spend 15mins or so with me to actually discuss all this so who knows if this is a medically sound explanation of what happened. Incidentally, I was under a tremendous amount of stress around the same time as the accident.

My mum got hers about a year after she got Sudeck. Obviously the sudeck was allready making her sleep very bad and the pain involved with that must have also made her more receptive to it.
I really wish they would do more research, but shamefull as it is we all know that research is controlled by farmaceutical companies and they will only look in to something if they think they can make a buck. My honest opinion.

I've heard so many possible causes it just makes me wonder why they don't try to look at any of them any closer. I'm sure a lot of Fibro patients would be more than willing to cooperate with such a research if it ment they had a better chance on a more comfortable life. But who are we hey?

I think many of the syndromes out there are in your systems just waiting for a trigger to set them off.  Gluten intolerance can be triggered by a pregnancy, trauma, a virus...anything that stresses our bodies in any ways can become a trigger.  I also feel that some of us are more prone to these syndromes from our genes...many things are family related.  My mom and 2 aunts have fibro, when I mentioned this to my rheumy, he shook his head yes and added that to my chart. sad I do not think it is anything we have done, we are just members of the club that was chosen. wink

Fiona, I feel like you, there are too many pharmaceutical companies working on meds for fibro and nobody is looking at what could be the cause of it. But it is kind of apparent that traumatic events and stress can cause it. I am sure that there are people researching as we speak. We just don't know about it. Learn to deal with it in the meantime. It is frustrating, but we can live with fibro. It doesn't own us.

Pharmaceutical companies do not want us cured and they do not want a reason found.  If they find the reason, then meds may not be needed and the pharmaceutical companies want our money because we give so much to them.  The pharmaceutical companies are the ones with the big bucks for research and they do not dole it out to things like fibro, gluten intolerance, CFS, and such.

@ Karen: i'm stil very much in the process of learning to deal with it. I only have symtoms since a year, i've pinpointed for myself that Fibro is the only explanation (My mum having Fibro helped with this, otherwise i was probably still wondering what the hell was wrong with me) First rheumatologist appt is only in juli so still waiting on the definite diagnose. In the meantime i take it one step at a time, i'm sure over time i will cope better. Plus it's been a bad week this week, massive flare up that started yesterday, entire upper body feels like it's in a vice at the moment.

There is a lot of research going on with fibromyalgia.  They just haven't found any certain thing.  Because there is a myriad of symptoms, the pharmaceutical companies are doing their best to come up with something to help. 

 

When I got fibro it was called fibrositis and all there was was aspirin and ibuprofen, which happened to be prescription only in those days.  I used this and tried other things and that lead to my being able to learn how to control the pain.  Unfortunately now, when you go to the doctor, the doctor gives out prescriptions of things that are supposed to help.  But we are all so different.  What works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.  You just have to keep trying things until  you hit upon what will give you control over the pain.  I know some of the things I do, I had to force myself to do.  They didn't feel good at the time but perseverence paid off. 

 

Here is a link about all the research that is going on.  Also, in Fibro 101, the link called Doctors Respond to New York Times Article will show you what they think is going on but more research is being done.  So, don't worry.  Help is on the way.  They are doing the very best they can for us.
