Di I Ned this test?

Hi everyone hope your all well, or as well as we can be...

Quick question, has everyone on here had an emg test? I haven't I saw a rheumatologist who did a heap of blood tests six years ago when I was first diagnosed...

Also saw a neurologist but he just did a quick check of me and said you have fibro....

I'm just wondering because I don't want to have a emg if I dont need one....I'm a very anxious person and tests freak me out.....

My dr said I don't need one so should I just run with that....help need advice what do you guys reckon.....thanks shannon

I had one done because I had a cervical fusion with spinal cord compression. I wouldn't have one done unless I had like carpal tunnel or something like my history. If he gave you the diagnosis what would be the reason for the test? If you are looking at disability case you might want to consider it for records.

Hi Shannon.  When I first went through all the testing that comes with getting a dx of fibro, an EMG was on the list.  My other tests came back negative so that test was cancelled by the doctor.  I don't really know what they were looking for and no doctor has ever suggested it again.

I had an EMG. It was actually my first test since my first symptom was numbness and tingling in my left arm. This was months before anyone thought of Fibromyalgia as being a possibility. The EMG usually looks for nerve entrapment somewhere. While for me the EMG was negative they saw muscle spasms in my neck which I wasn't feeling yet. Once the EMG was clear I was sent for a brain MRI. Some Drs. find it necessary to rule EVERYTHING out even if all signs point to Fibro. I had one of those Drs, even after the Fibro diagnosis I still had genetic testing done due to my sister's test showing she was a carrier for something that I had similar symptoms to.

Medicine is certainly not an exact science, but if you trust your Dr, you should follow their recommendations. Sometimes they are looking out for themselves and making sure they cover their butts, but I like to believe they are looking out for us too.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, the EMG was probably the most uncomfortable test I have ever been through, however once it's over it's over and it feels to good to know on the spot how it went. If your Dr doesn't think you need it then no point in going through with it, in my opinion. If you feel like your symptoms are progressing or something else is going on then perhaps revisit it as a possibility. I know many of us on the site have had EMGs, but there are many who have not as well.
