Legs and feet go to sleep, sitting on the toilet!

Geez, is my circulation THAT bad?  I am always cold, but other than that, I didn't think so.  Or have I just crossed over into old age land? 

Today it was ridiculous...after sitting there about 10 minutes, I stood up to walk and my feet were totally asleep.  It took a couple of minutes before all the tingling went away.

So often I see things in myself that my parents went through....but that was only a few years ago, when they were late 70s and 80s.  I'm 56!  What the heck?  I realize I'm not alone in this feeling...not on this forum.  (Not that I wish any of this on anyone, but misery does love somebody who understands.)    smilewinkgrin

Debbie, I can relate. Anytime I sit, I need to keep my feet moving or they turn blotchy blue and purple. I have Raynauds and poor circulation.

My mother who is 80, plays on a womans golf league, and can out shop anyone. I'm 59 and can't keep up to her. I'm thankful she is in good shape.

Dad was pretty active too. He had Melanoma, and basal cell cancer...his left lung had nodes removed from cancer...had myelody splastic anemia(blood cancer)...went blind in the right eye from a stroke, heart disease, COPD and Parkinsons Disease and lots of other stuff. He would go walking with his walker and oxygen, almost right to the end.

My Dad still is my inspiration...he never gave up.

Debbie, the seat is hard and you are cutting off the circulation in your legs.  I do the same thing.  I'll sit there because it hurts to get up!  I had a massage on Wednesday and she said I had "ropey" muscles in the front of my thighs and asked what kind of chairs I was sitting on.  I told her about the toilet seat and also my feet will "go to sleep" and she said that was causing the ropey muscles!  So, don't sit that long if you don't have to.

 

Now, I figured out an easier way to get off the toilet.  (Leave it to me.  I spend so much time in the bathroom that whenever my dog finds me "missing", she goes from bathroom to bathroom looking for me!  LOL)  I digress.  Anyway, I lean to my left, put my right hand on the toilet seat (I'm right handed) and push myself up and this helps the pain in my legs.  You might try that.

Debbie, my toilet is in a seperate little room in the bathroom. I use the door to get up....yep, when I'm finished, I open the door and grab the door levers and pull myself right up....hopefully I won't pull the door of the hinges someday. How come our pets follow us to the bathroom?

It is frustrating to feel like you are handicapped before " your time. "

Debbie - i get this too, and I'm only 21. My feet and legs constantly falling asleep. Its so frustrating because I'm always moving around in my seat at school or on the bus to prevent it from happening, and a lot of times when its time to get up I have to grab something to stop from falling!

I find that massaging them helps get the blood flowing again.

I have one of those small plastic Rubbermaid stepstools. It helps because putting my feet on it raises back of thighs off the hard seat.

Applevenus, I really like the stepstool idea.

Robin, your dad sounds like he was a lot like mine. He was my hero, too. A track athlete almost up to the end, when he developed ALS.

Don't worry, I'm only 29 and my body feels 3x times older than me, and my brain is stuck at the age of 19 smilewinkgrin smilewinkgrin smilewinkgrin Lol.

I got to say that my seat in the bathroom is soft and cushy. My husband changed it for me. I have raynauds and my feet would turn blue hanging down since I have been on coumadin, I don't have that problem. My legs stop hurting also. I think the blood is flowing better.

My legs fall asleep just sitting in general since the MVA in 2008...I couldn't tell you how many times I have fallen flat on my face because I do not realize my foot is "asleep"..really embarrassing when in public! :-/

Thanks Applevenus...thats a great idea....the step stool, I am going to give that a try. That is what is great about this forum. I mean who would have thought someone would have an answer for my legs falling a sleep while on the toilet....lol...You are all so helpful and I am thankful I found this site.

I haven't had any issues with this yet. May I ask a personal question?

Does something like this come with being overweight? I've lost 20 lbs. in the last six months and I'd like to lose 15 more. I'm hoping this won't become an issue for me.

Almost...I am not sure about legs falling a sleep having anything to do with being overweight, mine fall a sleep when I am in my bathroom off my bedroom but not in the main bathroom. The toilet in my bathroom sits a little higher than the main. I am about 25lbs overweight but, like I said it just depends which toilet I use. I also have been trying to get off the excess weight I gained when I quit smoking 2 yrs. ago, it's not easy.

Good luck on your weight loss journey you sound like you have a great start.

I had read or heard somewhere that the stool under your feet puts your body in the best position for using the bathroom. Think about how it would he done before toilets were invented and you had to squat down to go. Bringing the knees upwards and all.

10 years later than original post but who knows, someone might still run across this. 🤔
