Hi, Anna, and welcome! I'm glad you found us and joined the family. Nope, you are not crazy. That type of "diagnosis" is given by people who don't know what they are talking about and don't know much about fibro.
Fibromyalgia is recognized by the American Medical Association, the American College of Rheumatology, the National Institute of Health, and the World Health Organization to name a few. BUT, there are still doctors out there that don't believe in fibromyalgia.
I would suggest that you see a rheumatologist. Be sure to ask if they treat fibromyalgia patients before you make the appointment. Many with fibro use these doctors. My board certifies Internist handles my fibro and other illnesses. A good neurologist might help, too, but they too need to believe in fibro.
Be sure to check out Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links are called Symptoms, A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia, and What Else Could It Be.
Another great link is called Doctor's Respond to New York Times Article. These are doctors that are studying fibro and most feel this is a neurological illness so, yes, it can involve nerves. We fibromites know it involves nerves when we feel like water is running down our leg but it really isn't, when we feel like a bug is crawling on us but it really isn't, etc.
I use malic acid/magnesium supplements and vitamin D3 to help with pain and fatigue. There are links in Fibro 101 about these and how they work in your body. You might want to check that out. Also, gentle stretching exercises, also in Fibro 101, are good along with gentle daily exercises. I walk and swim as my gentle exercises. Yoga is another good exercise. Pacing yourself helps, too. It all gets done but in a different time frame. Lastly, I get gentle massages and that really helps. No deep massages. I would be miserable if I was given a deep massage.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. Hope to hear more from you soon.
