Hi everyone,

I live in Canada but due to the weather episodes, I am not well upon the fall to winter change, and then the winter itself becomes quite harsh cry I was wondering if anyone has had to transfer due to their spouses' illness from Canada to the lower U.S., and if so, what had to be done?

I wish I could move. I understand the winters are ruff. The economics are keeping me here. Alaska has been very lucky that they didn't get the full recession. My husband job is doing well and I have come satisfied with a house over my head and food on the table. So I tell myself how blessed I am and try to make the best of life. If you told me that I could move to Florida, I would have my bags pack over night. Lol I always wonder how someone fibro does when moving from a cold climate to a warm climate. Hope you can find a warm state.

BunBun, I transferred to Florida from Cleveland, Ohio when my husband passed on.  Cleveland's weather is pretty close to Canadian weather.  The first couple of years Florida's summers were quite warm for me.  I wasn't used to that at all but now I'm so accustomed to it that when it gets in the low 70's, I'm putting on a sweater and slacks!  Your body adjusts to the weather.  Plus, here, there is sooo much to see and do. 

 

I wouldn't worry about it too much.  If you transfer to states like Minnesota, you won't notice a difference!

Thanks for that. I guess transferring from state to state was easy for you to do, paper-trail wise? My husband doesn't think he can easily get a work visa because there aren't jobs in "desperate need of him". I thought I read somewhere online that if your spouse is ill due to weather episodes, it's a health matter, and a visa can be issued to the working spouse. I'd be hoping to work MORE if he gets transferred, and possibly get myself more work credentials through school/upgrade courses. *sigh* I'm really stuck, like literally, I can't get out of bed without it being a struggle BECAUSE of whatever front has moved in on Ontario *curses to thee*, lol.

Here in the States I just had to call my credit cards and give them my new address, fill out a new address change at the post office and everything was forwarded to my new address for six months.  That bought me time to contact firms and let them know where I now lived.  I also changed banks.  Before I moved, I was naturally in Florida to buy a house.  So, I set up a new checking account.  Then, once I moved, I wrote a check from my northern bank for the entire amount that I had and deposited it in my Florida bank.  I also called the northern bank to close my account.  It really wasn't difficult for the changes.

 

Can't you get a visa first and then have your husband look for a job in the US?  Once he does, then  you can plan the move.  It's more difficult if you own your own home...at least here...because our housing market is sooo slow right now and difficult to sell houses.  We sold our home after my husband got his new job...but he died 13 days before our move.  It was a mess for me because I got out of the deal for the new house we bought together and then I bought my own home closer to where my Mom used to live.  But, if you are in an apartment, you shouldn't have too much difficulty, I don't think.
