After years of hashimoto's symptoms, I met with a doctor who ran some tests and they diagnosed me with hashimoto.
Now, I'm pretty stupid because I didn't know anything about the thyroid gland until they told me I had one being destroyed by my immune system, so I'm still learning about it.

Pardon me if I ask weird questions but. Here's what happened and my questions.

They put me on Synthroid for the first time in April 09.
Started gradually until I reached "my dose". 0.088!
TSH and T4 are now fine. T3 too. BUT it's like since I started Synthroid, my fibro symptoms reappeared.

Is there a logical explanation to that?

Doctors told me it would get better once I reached my dose, but it didn't. I do have a lot more energy. I no longer nap. I can go a whole day without napping or being tired. But the pain is still there.

Vitamin D, B12, Iron, Magnesium etc etc is fine. So it's not a deficiency.

Is there a correlation between the moment I started Synthroid and the beginning of my fibro symptoms?

Hi, Anna!  I really don't know why you would get more pain after starting the Synthroid.  Maybe your body had a reaction to it.  You could get a good response if you post this in our Thyroid Disorders forum.  Most of us in fibro don't know much, if anything, about Hashimoto's.  Here is a link that will take you to the Thyroid Disorders forum.

Hi there...my mom had Hashimoto's and took synthroid.  I don't know for certain if there's any correlation but since the destruction of her thyroid gland, she had horrible muscle pain.  We used to laugh because she had a container of icy hot in every room.  I could not walk in the house without her asking me to rub some of it on her shoulders, back and neck.  I DO know that blood work is very sensitive and the hormone levels only have to be off by a rat hair to create symptoms...such as muscle pain, fatigue etc. (that's what her doctor told me)  I often wondered if she had fibro as her symptoms seemed so similar to mine.

I don't understand it all, either! I was put on Synthroid when I was 17, taken off at 37, and put back on at 55. I haven't noticed any difference in pain levels, just a tiny bit more energy - maybe?

I take that back....the first time, I may not even have had a blood test, just the doctor putting his finger over my throat as I swallowed.

My present doctor took me off because he suspected it was causing me to have a highly-elevated liver enzyme, and the test showed I didn't need it. That didn't do anything for the enzyme, in fact, now I have 2 that are elevated. They still don't know why that is.

Now, apparently, I need it again. Round and round and round we go!

I felt like hell on synthroid and its generic equivalents. Felt achy, cold, horrible... I finally found a dr who agreed to let me try Armour thyroid and I've felt so much better since. If you have a dr who only goes by bloodwork and doesn't consider symptoms, find a better dr. I've found such a great dr who is a DO (doctor of osteopathy). She is trained to treat the whole body, not just individual symptoms as so many traditional drs do.

There is a great site online stopthethyroidmadness.com. It has tons of info and will have many stories from women who do better off of T4 replacement only (Synthroid)... check it out.

Some people believe that fibro is just untreated hypothyroidism. Not me, but there are some out there as the symptoms of fibro and low thyroid can overlap.
