Does anybody else live in a area with frequent earthquakes? I just got woke up with my bed shaking. By the time, I get to run for safe place it stops. If you do, how do you handle it? I finally got my disaster boxes done. I think with fibro the anxiety is higher.

We had one in August in central Virginia. It was rather bizarre, and knocked my sliding doors off-track. We apparently had after-shocks, but not so I ever noticed. It's like anything else, I suppose. Be prepared and take it with a grain of laughter.

I don't think there is anyplace safe from earthquakes anymore!  They are coming in the weirdest places these days.  I was in one in northern Ohio about twenty years ago.  My suncatchers were banging on my windows and I thought my furnace was going to blow up.  By the time I realized it was an earthquake, it stopped.  I had no idea that we could have one in Ohio! 

 

Yes, its frightening when it happens.  Just have a plan and go into action at the instant this starts.  That can give you peace of mind right there.  It's the not knowing what to do that makes things worse, I think.

I grew up in California and lived through the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 89. I've experienced many other smaller earthquakes too. Since I've moved to Oregon in 2004 I haven't felt one. The big one in 89 was a bit more exciting that I'd like to ever experience again, but I have to be honest that I'm rather blase about them, maybe because I've experienced them all of my life.

If having an emergency kit makes you feel better by all means make one. But don't spend a lot of time worrying about it. In 89 my experience was that friends and neighbors all pitched in together. Without power and with no idea how long it'd be before we'd have power again we decided to bbq our meat before it spoiled. So many homes had parties, LOL. I found that people were far more helpful and friendly than usual. I had a tiny TV that plugged into the car, we set it on the roof and I can't tell you how many people stopped to watch and see what was going on...we were starved for news.

Generally when people were killed there wasn't anything they could have done to avoid it. So I decided that I had better things to worry about.

I really like what everyone had to say. I can see how just by knowing your emergency plans for one would relieve some anxiety. I herd a Californian say we have so many, I am so use to things rattling. I am trying not to show too much anxiety with my daughter present. I wouldn't want her to live in fear.
