Hello, my name is Tracie. I have a few questions about Fibromyalgia. I've been recently diagnosed and have most if not all of the classic symptoms, however, I have some other symptoms that the doctor can't figure out. I've been tested for just about everything under the sun and nobody knows how to help. Here they are:

1. Superficial numbness around my eyes, mouth and cheeks
2. Slurring my words, especially when I'm tired
3. Falling asleep. So bad I am unable to drive anymore. It's coma like and only during the daytime hours.

The sleeping issue is the worst, it happens when sitting, driving, walking, etc. I simple can not stay awake, my eyes roll up into my head, my head flops over. I sometimes have to crawl to my bedroom because I can't walk due to falling over.

Has anyone had any of these symptoms? Know anything about them? Any help anyone has to offer will be most welcome. I have been taken off of work (I drive for a living as a Building Inspector) due to the sleeping issue and we've lost my portion of our families income. We desperately need it back. Thank you in advance.

Hi Tracie :) Welcome, though I am sorry there is a necessity for you to have to be here. I am also newly diagnosed (May of this year). I slur my words a lot, or stumble, stammer, or stutter. From what Ive learned, slurring words is common with fibro. I would not be overly concerned on that count. However, your sleep problem sounds like narcolepsy.

Its the third disorder when you scroll down the page. In order to get a diagnosis, I think you have to have a sleep study, but I could be wrong... I would bring it up to my doctor, if I were you, to see what he/she thinks about it being a possibility.

The numbness... I have no clue. Maybe someone with more knowledge here can help.

Hi Tracie and welcome to HW, there is a bunch of great info in the thread fibro101 if you haven't read it. I have the numbness in my face when my blood glucose is way too low have you been checked for diabetes? Don't worry most of us here have been tested and retested for several other ailments.

I hope you get the sleeping disorder figured out soon, its so frustrating to know something is wrong and not know what it is.

welcome to the fibro forum. Having fibro myself for many years I never had some of the symptoms you describe. I do have fibro fog meaning forgetting things a lot, but never having slurred speach with it. Your falling a sleep during the daytime could be several things beside fibro. You could have sleep apnea and not gettting enough sleep at night causing you to be tired. I am not sure what kind of meds you are on, but sometimes the side effects can cause problems. I would have things checked out before giving fibro all the credit for these symptoms.

Hi, Tracie, and welcome!  I'm so glad you found us and joined the family.  Your symptoms are very much like an illness called narcolepsy.  The good news is there is treatment for this.  Here is a link about the symptoms from the Mayo Clinic.  Also, along the left side of this link you will find more info about this illness.

You might want to see a doctor that is trained in sleep disorders.  They would be able to appropriately diagnose you and treat you if you have this illness.  I found this link that you could use to find a good doctor.  I sure didn't know where to find one until I found this link for you.  Hope this helps you.

Welcome!!

Definitely talk to your doc about a sleep study-sounds very like narcolepsy and can be dangerous (as you know) There are alot of sleep disturbances with fibro, but yours has escalated to a new level.

I think maybe a brain MRI might be a good idea too.
