When does "doing too much" catch up with you?

Hi everyone, I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I did a lot more than I usually could one day it was a ton of stuff and I felt fine that day,but the next day I was a bit sore and then wham the day after that I had the worst fibro flare I ever had. Does anyone here get that or is it usually the day after you have a busy day?

The day after for me it hits hard. I tend to call it "the price to be paid" for having too much fun!

But during the day I can have sudden fatigue attacks that stop me in my tracks but can also leave just as quickly as they came.

What kind of art do you do? I am a pencil artist. I've been doing it about 10 years & draw portraits by commission. I know there are quite a few artists with medical problems like Lupus. One artist I know suspects her Lupus could have been cause by her use of chemicals in art (paints, turpentine, etc)

Hi, Tiredartist, and welcome!  I'm so glad you found us and joined the family.  Pain from overdoing varies with me as to what I really have done.  I think you will get many different answers to this question!

 

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.  Good starting links are called Symptoms and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia.  You probably will see yourself there!

Glad you found the forum. For me, it varies from time to time. Very often, though, it does hit me a couple of days after I've overdone it. Then again, it can be immediate.

One thing I've learned about fibro - just when you think you've got it figured out, it changes. Oh joy! :( Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone. I feel a little better now I think the really bad attack may have been caused by the busy day even though it was a whole day after it. This disease is as strange as its name a lot of times.

I'm a graphic Designer by trade. During school I had to have a lot of surgeries for my lung. I still managed to graduate at the top of the class and when I got out I had a job I really liked at a sign shop as thier designer for about a year, after leaving that job was when my fibro started emerging. I wanted to set up my own small business doing graphic design,but kept feeling really ill it took about two years before I got a diagnoisis of fybromialgia. I struggled the whole time to try to do what I loved,but I never got too far with feeling so sick and a lot of family disasters at the time. I have my own website and love to do logos and vector illustrations,but at the moment I'm on disability. I'm really quite scared I want to do graphic design so bad,but I wonder who would hire me after being out of work for so long now and with being so sick. My dr seems really confident now that we know what it is that medicene can control it so I'm trying to keep positive.

Friday night, I went to a country bar and had a fun-filled night of line dancing. Yesterday, my calves were sore from overdoing it. Today, I can't even walk. lol

I'm in the same place you are also. I'm in Graphic Design, but having a hard time finding a job because I've already been out of work for so long. I worked at a newspaper for 2 1/2 years doing their page layout and (basically) being the Graphic Designer Supervisor. Everyone's work came through me, and I had to approve it. I've been out of work for almost 3 months. I lost my previous job because of health issues. And now, I have no health insurance and no job. lol

Keep your head up and keep posting on here. This is a great community filled with a lot of knowledgable and very friendly people. I hope things get easier for you.

for me - too much exercise today. Tomorrow will be more tired than usual. The next day, pain and muscle spasms to the point of being unable to move. The day after that, little bit better. By the end of the week, back to normal. The only answer I have found is to do just a little bit each day and not to ever exercise to the point of being tired after exercising. I do not have "normal" tells about when to stop, so I monitor time and energy and then stop, regardless of feeling like I can do so much more. It seems to be about balance (which I have such a very hard time doing!!).

It is definately a roller coaster isn't it.  I have days I feel good, I accomplish a lot sometimes its two days in a row and then bam i'm done for a couple of days.  Like today I just feel like really sluggish.  I've done a lot in the last two days and I guess it just finally hit me.  I guess that's why I try and clean like I do.  Their's no way I can clean my house in a couple of days.  I have to break it up in three or four days.  Even that can be a stretch depending on how I'm feeling.  I find it works better that way, I even break up the house on those days.  Like one day it might be laundry and bathrooms, the next day might be focusing on the kitchen and vacuuming, the next day change sheets and cleaning the living room.  It eventually all gets done.  I feel like that's how i am with most aspects of my life.  I can't jump in and tackle everything at once I have to break it down.  If i do it the other way I pay for it as far as pain and fatigue goes.

Usually 24-72 hours after overdoing it, the pain and disability reach their peak. It depends on how much I've overdone it. Recovery time depends on how bad the crash is. It can take a couple days or a couple weeks or longer.
I have had episodes, though, where I was near collapse right away after overdoing it. Those were nightmare situations where I felt like I was dying.
These days, I'm doing better, and I do pace myself.

I didn't know houses were supposed to be cleaned!  turn yeah turn As I look around mine, that explains a lot.

Seriously, I've had to lower my standards by about 90%.  A couple of years ago, I paid a friend now and then to clean for me, but there's no money for that anymore.

Now if there was ever a market for animal hair, I'd be a rich woman...that and dust, dander, and cobwebs.  eyes

My husband is actually glad that I don't clean 100% anymore. He used to joke around with visitors. He would say, "dont sit your glass down on the table if you want more, it won't be there." I used to do a thorough exam of the downstairs before going to bed. If anything was out of place, I put it away or washed it.... In the morning it was the upstairs. Now, if its a clean mess, I leave it. If its not in the way, if its not dangerous to anyone, I leave it for a better time. Now everything looks lived in and comfy. There is no way I could ever keep up with that kind of house cleaning now. Just working a full time job is enough to tire me out. And its a sitting, low key, low stress job.
