Hi Terrahawk,
This is a very interesting thread because for many, many years I've had issues with difficulties breathing. Inhalers never helped me. Recently I was diagnosed with asthma. I wasn't found to have asthma before by doctors, more than likely because I was told that I have the opposite of asthma. Asthmatics have trouble getting air in, I have trouble getting air out.
What has finally helped me, given me some relief, in these past few months and has given me the ability to take deep breaths is my cranial fascial massage therapist and my physical therapy doctor. My PT doctor is helping me with the tight muscles in my pelvic floor area which can affect areas like the diaphragm. She also gives me exercises to do at home. She thinks tight muscles in the pelvic area can cause fibromyalgia. Tight muscles can spread across the body if they're not taken care of.

I've also learned through the years what also contributes to my breathing difficulties. I was diagnosed with multiple chemical sensitivity. So if I was working on a car, I would have increased difficulty breathing.
Good luck to you.
