Epidurals do help...but...depending on the situation/person...depends on for how long. Most docs will only give max three a year so hopefully they will last for four months each. Sadly mine did not. I've had several done by a rheumy who did NOT use fluouroscopy. None of them lasted more than a week. Then about
six months ago, I went to a pain management doctor, she is an anesthesiologist, docs that are VERY experienced with epidurals. I have to say mine was painful, very painful. It took her over an hour to complete, along with fluouroscopy. She told me the reason was because of the problem in my lower back, L5/S1. I have spinal stenosis, quite severe, along with disk degeneration and something else I can't think of right now, which caused the problem for her and the pain for me. I did get a lot of relief for about
two months, I was thrilled. It did NOT make all the pain go away, but really helped that horrific sciatic pain and allowed me to exercise (walk) again. This particular doc told me she would not do another one for 7 to 8 months, she expected it to last that long and mine only lasted, as I said, for about
two months. Hope that helps,
Miriam PS. My sister used this same pain doc and she did wonders for her, so I really think it was my back and not the doc that was the problem
