I'm finally having spine surgery - yay!

Gee, I never would've thought this could make my day.  But it has!  And I was having quite a pity party before the doctor's office called.  I was actually beginning to think my insurance company had decided they weren't going to make enough $$$ off of me and were flat out refusing to cover it. 

So I'll be going in next Wed. the 7th of March.  They're officially calling it a discectomy at this point.  I can stand it till then....   yeah   ....I think...thanks everybody for listening to my rants!

I'm glad you got the call w/ a date. Just sorry it has gotten to this point. Isn't it sad when you get excited to get the 'ok' for a surgery? lol  I had to fight my insurance co yrs ago to get the surgery for my gallbladder. Then I had to fight them right after I got out of the hospital. I hate insurance companies, and I don't think hate is tooo strong a word. lol

Anyway, I hope this does the trick for you and you start feeling so much better very quickly. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Hi Debbie, I am so happy for you that you got the call and have everything fixed up for the 7th. I know that this surgery is going to cost you so I hope everything goes better than planned. Please continue to post about your recovery as well because I am getting a little nervous about my upcoming surgery. I am going to watch your posts as I am curious how surgery will effect FM.

I do not follow instructions well so I am going to wish you the best and please listen and follow the advise of your Dr. Here's wishing you the best. Rose

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery! I've had this surgery twice, and I've had surgery once since I've had fibro. I have two bits of advice for whatever they are worth: I was always given a prescription for muscle relaxants after back surgery. They were more important to me than the pain killers. Also, with my last surgery (which was abdominal) I had more neck pain from lying in bed than actual incision pain. I told myself that if I ever had to have surgery again, I would invest in a good cervical pillow beforehand.

I'm glad you finally got the okay from your insurance company.  The decision to have surgery was tough enough but then not to have insurance behind you would be horrible.  I know you want to get this over with and I will be praying that everything goes as planned and you will be "dancing a jig" in the very near future!

Hi, I am Susie from the chronic pain forum and I saw a post of yours there about your legs and feet swelling and you mentioned the dr wanting to put you in compression hose. I have these for the same problem and I went to a medical supply my dr sent me to. They cost almost $75 and my insurance whittled it down to paying me back less than $50 of that money. Ouch, that was a good gouge by them. I have found them on Ebay much less but you need to be fitted first before buying them off of Ebay.

But, getting to the reason I wanted to post to you is, my cardiologist told me to go to Walgreens or any drug store and they sell compression hose that look more like a dress sock for men and women. He says he wears them because of being on his feet all day and they cost much less than the other compression hose. They are under $20 compared to almost $75. He told me they would work as good as the others. So, I did and yes they do help and they are easier to put on. The other type of hose are nearly impossible to get on and if you have a bad back, all I can say is good luck getting those things on, lol.

Also, good luck on your pending surgery, I know you will do just fine.

Austen - that's a great idea, I think I will get a cervical pillow. A friend of mine just came out of gallbladder surgery and had the same complaint...his neck. And another pain is something I can do without! I'm already taking Flexeril, and will make sure I have enough for afterwards.


Rose - I know you've said what kind of surgery you're having, but I can't remember (my mushy brain.) When and what is it?


Alice - So you've been through the insurance squeeze too...I agree, hate is not too strong a word when it comes to insurance companies! Yesterday I was on an online site through my co. and I couldn't access certain interactive parts. So I called customer service, and it turns out I have to first complete a health assessment. I just said, "oh, ok," but there's no way I'll do that. They probably just want more info on me so they can deny me benefits down the road! (Benefits for which we pay $1600 a month with a $5,000 deductible for each of us!) Not too long ago, I'd have thought that was a ridiculous, paranoiid way of thinking, but not any more.


Sherrine, I will definitely be dancing a virtual jig at your next party, if not here in reality! But you never know...;)

Susie, I just saw your post - thanks for the good advice and all. Actually, the hose I bought from the medical supply place were just regular support hose, because when the girl was fitting me I couldn't take anything tighter. Now it turns out I can't even take these! They make my foot (the one affected by Sciatica) hurt so much worse! I'm going to call the doctor to see if I absolutely have to wear them, because otherwise, I won't.

I'm glad that you found some that work for you.

Thank you Robin, I can definitely use all the healing vibes I can get! Just got back from my pre-op and now I can't wait to get it behind me.
