I did a couple of days in the hospital for abdominal pain and was diagnosed with colitis but no specifics on which one. Does anyone have any info or experiences you can share? Like what kicks it off, what your symptoms are, what helps, etc. Thank you!

Sera, do you have ulcerative colitis?  I had Crohn's colitis.  It's an inflammation of the colon.  For me, there were many things I had to stay away from.  I didn't eat nuts or popcorn, spicy foods, fresh veggies (they had to be cooked), no salad (I missed that a lot!) acidic foods like tomatoes, etc.  I could eat meat, fish, potatoes, pasta with like alfredo sauces, rice, cooked veggies, canned fruit, breads, dairy products (I'm not lactose intolerant), etc.  I think you are catching the drift.  Do talk to your doctor.  They might have a good list for you to go by.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this but it might just calm down for you and you can slowly add food that you have eliminated back in your diet.  You might want to head to our ulcerative colitis forum.  You will learn a lot from them.

Know exactly what colitis it is. I have UC. This means you have ulcers inside the colon, that are produced by your body, not by any outside factor. Crohn's colitis mean the inflammation is caused by food or outside sources, but then may heal if the instigator is removed.

I can mostly keep mine under control by medication. Asacol ER. I have no food restrictions, other than very fatty foods (because I no longer have a gall bladder to process). My biggest problem is inflammations of any kind. No OTC painkillers, avoid stress, any infection anywhere in my body sets off the colitis flare. Once I had an infected tooth which was easily taken care of by one anti-biotic, but I had to take another kind to quell the flare which was much worse.

Right now, my life is kind of stressful, so I have been in low-grade pain. Not all the time, but enough.

No, Myself.  Crohn's colitis is caused by Crohn's disease that is only affecting your colon.  The ulcers from Crohn's disease can eat through the intestines and start affecting organs close by.  The ulcers from ulcerative colitis don't do that.  You have ulcers but they don't burrow through the colon.  Also, Crohn's disease can affect your entire digestive system whereas ulcerative colitis affects only your colon and rectum.

 

I was misdiagnosed with ulcerative colitis for 11 years before they discovered it was Crohn's disease that was causing this.   Only my colon and rectum were affected so it was called Crohn's colitis.

 

Foods can exacerbate the condition and I had to eat what I told Sera to help keep it under control.  This goes for both ulcerative colitis as well as Crohn's colitis.

Thanks! We have eliminated ulcerative and infectious colitis, as well as antibiotic colitis. That leaves inflammatory- I finished a 7 day course of levaquin today, I was told I had a gram negative culture and thus the levaquin. Not sure what to do from here, going to make an appt with my GP who I adore :) so far i havent noticed any foods that hurt but its early yet :)

I have collagenous colitis -- only diagnosed with a biopsy during a colonoscopy. It is auto-immune and causes collagen to form on my colon. I have severe diarrhea when not on meds. I can't eat fiber -- no fruits, vegetables or whole grains. However, now that I've been on the meds for a while, I have found a few items that I can eat just a little bit of. But as soon as I overdo it or eat two different ones on the same day, diarrhea.

I have Lymphocytic colitis.  I had what they thought was antibiodic colitis a few years ago but now I wonder if it wasn't the start of they Lymphocytic colitis.  It is also auto-immune.  I have to take meds each day or have problems.  I have to stay away from dairy and watch food high in gluten.  It is curious to me that so many of us that have fibro also have colitis.  I also have IBS. This can be very painful. At least doctors seem to know more about colitis and treatment can usually give you alot of relief or even take away the symptoms after time. I sure hope you feel better.  I know what is like.  I had diarrhea 12 times a day for 4 months before they figured it out.
