Newbie here -looking for a Fibro Friend in my area.

Hi,

After having friends and family put some distance between me and them because of my fibro, I am looking to make new fibro friends in my area.  I'm not a complainer and pretty much don't talk about my symptoms, but I do set limits on the activities that I choose to get involved with.    So if anyone lives  near Balto., Maryland area and is looking for a fibro friend, let me know.  I am 60, love to read, shop, take drives, decorate, enjoy eating out, and love flea markets.  Just looking to get away with a friend for a few hrs.  a week to make life more enjoyable.

Yes, it's hard. I know what you mean. I've lately been on a Golden Girls jag...funny how it used to be about old ladies, and now they're solidly middle-aged! ;)

Anyway, I find I relate more to Sophia a lot of times than to the others. She's 83, I'm 57. Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture??

Hi, and welcome!  I just wanted to say Hi, also.  I, too, wish you lived close to me.  I love the things you mentioned.  But I'm sure you will find people close to you.  I have friends that do these things and they don't have fibro but yet we get together anyway. 

 

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.

Thanks for all the welcoming replys. It's just so hard. You think I'd be use to this darn disorder by now. Most days I make do, but sometimes being on disability and not having anyone around is really isolating. I get out to look in on my mother and run errands etc., but it's mostly things I "have to" do within the world of "normal people." Inside I still feel like I'm 40. On the outside I don't look bad either. If they only knew I feel 100 because of the symptoms. My neighbors do not know I have fibro. They think I'm normal and am just lazy and don't want to work. ha ha.......I tell very few people. My family knows and a friend who doesn't understand and thinks it's all in my head. I've been to support groups and even helped run one. The first group only wanted to complain the whole time. I'd rather give 15 min. in a meeting to vent and complain then move on to other things like having speakers or talk about what we can do in the advocacy area.
I feel more empowered when I can DO something to get the word out.
I got a doctor who is up on fibro to come talk to our group. The lady who started the group became too sick to keep it going. No one had the energy to maintain the group so it folded.
I'd just like to start a group that would meet to do something fun knowing we have our limits and time restraints. I can do alot of the same things I used to do, only I've learned now to pace myself and take it down quite a few notches. The only people who understand why that is and what it means is people with fibro. It's maddening. I feel that unless I limp, moan, walk funny etc. that no one will ever believe I'm sick. My therapist tells me that I've gotten too good at looking good.
So what is she saying put sweats on, go without makeup, don't comb my hair, and look like a slob just to prove I'm sick? If I do that I'll feel sicker!!!!
