Oh Rose,
Please don't say that "it's only pain"...I just went through a horrific experience sounding very similar to what you are dealing with. It began for me a week ago Friday night, waking up in horrific pain from my lower back, wrapping around my right buttock, right hip and into my right thigh and then my leg went numb. I have never in my life had pain this severe, all nerve pain. I could NOT find a place for myself, whether sitting or standing or lying down. I cried and cried and tried to care for myself, using hydrocodone and Flexeril until Saturday evening when I asked my husband to take me to the ER and he did. You better believe they will help you. I was completely honest, told them exactly what meds I had taken and how much I took. Because of the pain, my blood pressure had skyrocketed to 225/125!! Pain and anxiety. I scared the crap out of the ER personnel, I think they thought I was going to stroke out. I also had a fever and so they suspected I had an infection in my spine, an abscess. After 3 hours in the ER, and 3 injections of Dilaudid and Valium, they took me down for an MRI with contrast. It showed a pinched nerve at L3/L4, one more level added to the rest of the mess in my back. I stayed in the hospital until Wednesday. I was put on a Medrol dose pack, oral steroids, and given an epidural injection in the hopes to avoid surgery. This was recommended by a neurosurgeon, trying to avoid surgery. I went home Wed afternoon. I am getting better, but I am still in a lot of pain. I still cannot stand up straight, still have pain during the night, if I turn the wrong way and a lot of pain when I try to walk. My discharge papers state that I should try to stay as active as possible...not sure how I'm suppose to do that when I causes me so much pain. While in the hospital, I was getting a Dilaudid shot every four hours and 2 Norco pills, 10 mg each, every four hours and although it helped, it did NOT make the pain go away. I had to be wheeled from my bed to the bathroom, just couldn't walk. I remain positive and hopeful that things will improve. The epidural can take up to a week to kick in so I have a few more days left. One can only hope. I pray for you that you find peace and comfort. Having this kind of pain is so depressing and causes so much anxiety. Oh, my blood pressure normalized once I was put on the stronger pain meds, so yes, the hospital can help you. I will pray for you,
Miriam
