Tylenol has just lowered it's maximum daily dosage limit from 4000 mgs to 3000 mgs.  I seems that so many products contain acetimenophen that  people are unknowingly killing off their liver.   Percs, Vicodin and other pain killers have it...as do numerous OTC cough and cold products...Pamprin and sleep aids.  If you were to take your daily dose of Vicodin, for instance and then took a couple of swigs of Nyquil for your cold, you could easily surpass the safe limit.

I guess I am more aware of this because I can't take traditional pain products...I am allergic to most narcotics.  I take Tylenol and Advil and on some days...Holy Moly.  It's so easy to pop 'just a couple more' to take the edge off.

From what I have read, liver damage from taking too much Tylenol can be irrevesible, so be careful!

For letting us know this. It mush have been a recent change but I haven't heard anything on the news. They should broadcast this better so everybody knows. Thanks for being up on things.

Yes, Karen...it's new.  The products have not even changed the labeling yet.  I think not until next year.  I caught it on some medical show on television(they were discussing liver damage)  then Googled it...it's true!

Last time I saw my rhuemy, I had to sign a form that said I was informed about the danger of taking too much acetaminophen...there are sometimes I will take Excedrin for my headaches...have to be careful because of other meds I take. I haven't taken any since I am taking percocet 5/325 mg coming home from the hospital. Severe liver damage can happen or stomach ulcers or bleeding. NSAIDS can be dangerous if you do not follow the right dosage scheduling.

A lot of people think if it's over the counter, it can't hurt you...SOOO not true. As Donna mentioned, liver damage is irreversible. We really need to be very aware of what we are taking. Thanks Donna for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks so much for letting us know about this.  I usually try to avoid taking these type of products because of reflux-at times it seems like anything and everything upset my stomach.  However, my 15 year old daughter gets very bad cramps, and takes these type of products for them.  Although I don't think that she takes more than the recommended dosage, I do worry that sometimes she overdoes it.  I will have to warn her about this, and supervise more closely.

Stepping stone- is your daughters cramps menstral cramps? If so my daughter was like that. I started her on birth control for menstral cramps and they are almost completely gone.

Thanks, ak angel. Yes they are from her period. I had to go on the pill when I was just a little older than she is in order to control them. I just hate to see her having to go on it at such a young age. I had adenomyosis, as I got older, and I don't know if it was due to long term use of the pill or not. They kept putting me back on it as I got older because of my periods being heavy. I have always thought that she woud not need to take them for this, because there are so many other options in the way of medications. However, with this news, I may need to reconsider.

This is good to know. There are days that I take 4000+ mg when taking it in combination with tramadol. I wish there was a better alternative.

Stepping stone. My daughters Dr. Is encouraging her to take the birth controls that stop her mental cycle for 3 months. I wish they had that when I was young. She says it's safe not to have your cycle.

It is NOT SAFE to NOT have a period; however, it IS safe to only have a period 4 times a year. There are continous birth control pills but you need to stop them and have a period, as mentioned, at least 4 times a year. Make sure you speak to a gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist.

The link below is to the FDA announcement back in January of 2011 for those to read. More of us were aware of this on the Chronic Pain board as so many are on opiates due to the chronic pain so that is why many may not have known about this on the Fibro board.

Even though many manufacturers/pharmacies still have stock left over of opiates that contain the higher acetaminophen...like Lortab 5/500mg...etc....they cannot make anymore of them are continuing to be phased out.

Tylenol has been doing the same thing as they were allowed to sell off all the remaining stock of the old dosages...

As mentioned....so many people did not realize how much acetaminophen they were taking daily if they were on an opiate....and then happend to take medication for a cold, or have a drink here and there....so the toxicity was building up in their liver.
