Had a really bad day and need some help!

After working the night shift at work for about 3 weeks now, I finally got to go in today and work day shift. I was so tired because I was still stuck on the night shift scheduale I think and weekend shift is 12 1/2 hour shift. I was put on  packing which was what I was trained to do. and then suddenly they changed it and had me doing what they call repurposing. It requires walking up and down alot of stairs and picking up totes that are very wide and range in weight from 50 to 76 pounds. I had brought this up when I worked on the night shift that I couldn't lift that much and they put me somewhere else. When I got hired on at this job I had wrote that I could not lift alot of weight and could not bend repeatedly. However today they made me do it anyway. I did it because I need my job, but ended up hurting my back again. I have had chronic back pain for a while now and my Dr said that untill I could get an MRI done he was unsure of weather or not I would beable to work, but I did anyway. So today the office called me down and told be due to my back issues they needed me to leave due to my back problem and knew that I had hurt it. I didn't tell them and not sure who did. So to make a long story short they handed me a bunch of paper work that explained what all was required at this job and they needed my Dr to sign off on it before I could return to work. I know my Dr will not sign the paper work and I still have no insurance to get the MRI done. So I have lost my job due to my back problems. I was absolutely devistated. I have no Idea what I am going to do, and to top it all off I think I'm having a flare up. I don't like the word disability and really want to work but am startimg to realize that there isn't alot of jobs out there that I will beable to do. Has anyone else been through this? I really don't know what to do, I feel like part of me died today working was so important to me and the thought of not being able to just makes me sad! I really need advice or at the least some sholders cry

Hi Lisab88, I am sorry to hear that you were put in this difficult position! Some days I get sore after lifting what I suppose is "normal " household items so I can't imagine having to lift serious amounts of weight. I'm not sure what you can do about the other aspects- if you need to be off work because of a medical issue, does that not sound reasonable to you? If you don't think of it as a disability does that help?

I hope that you have some people in your life that you can talk to and who can offer you some support with this difficulty. We all want to contribute and of course you want to work. So sorry you're struggling.

Does your employer have any ability to accomodate you so you can stay there? Sounds like a really difficult day. Hope it get better; that you can find some relief and some peace this evening.

I am sorry you had such a bad day. It feels terrible when we lose a job. I was sent to the State physician who said I could no longer do my job and then I was told to pack up my stuff after 20 years of service and was escorted out of the building like I was a thief. So embarrassing and I was devastated. It worked out for me because they finally gave me retirement disability but to this day I still get turned down for Social Security disability. I think it is worth it for you to file for disability. I hope you can get your doctor on board. Good luck and don't let it get you down. We have a chronic painful disability that people can't understand unless they walk in our shoes.

Lisa I could remember the day that you describe because it happen to me also. I know how you must feel. You might just need to find the right job that fits your health condition. Do you think they might have another position that fits your health needs? If not give your self some rest and see what your options are. So many work places are careful do to employee injury now. They are looking after you and themselves. I had to stop work myself due to many chronic health problems. It has been a blessing to me, but I do have a husband for extra income. I hope you find a position that works for you. I am sorry for what happen

Thank you all so much for the feedback. I know that my employer can't accomodate me., which is okay it's not their fault they are a really large company and it's a very fast paced job. I have had my Dr already tell me once that He didn't know if I would beable to work. I don't know if i'm ready for that but I also know that there isn't alot out here where I live. I can only try to do what the Dr recommends, somehow get the MRI and go from there. Just wanted to say that all of you have been really wonderful and I apprichiate your support and compassion so much thanks for being there : )

They can't let you go like that. You need to talk to an attorney. They may have to pay you some money. If nothing else, unemployment. Then I would see about disability. Sometimes things happen that are out of our control, try to roll with the punches. But do talk to somebody, I don't think it is legal for them to let you go like they did.

I had basically the same thing happen to me this past spring. For 12 years I got wonderful evaluations. Suddenly my boss tells me I'm a poor worker and I'm laid off. I believe it was due to me telling him I had lupus last fall. They were not going to give me any unemployment until I got my lawyer.

Get you a lawyer and see what kind of help you can get.
