I LOVE the end of the semester. Email today from student in upper-level class. "I know I haven't been coming to class, but I need a presentation date." No name, but an indication of which class h/he is trying to get scheduled.

Hunh? If you are who I think you are, you have completed one quiz out of 8, no paper, and no exam. I haven't seen you since the middle of September. At a half a letter grade taken off for each absence, you are currently in negative numbers.

Oh, for the love of dog. A parent just called to try to get her daughter into a closed class for the spring. Ma'am, your child is an adult now. I am legally not able to speak to you about her.

The end has begun. The next three weeks require copious amounts of painkillers.

I think some kids today are so used to getting whatever they want and, if they have problems getting something, Mom and Dad step in to help the little guy.  They need to accept responsibility for their actions.   This means, attend classes, study, pass tests and quizzes and also sign up for classes in a timely manner. 

 

Myself, I don't think I could take teaching these days.  I taught back in the 1970's and it was nice.

There is a large sense of entitlement in most students now. Many researchers call it the 'trophy' issue. Some just have to learn the hard way that getting a trophy in third grade does not mean that this reward system continues into adulthood.

I felt that parent had really over-stepped the line. I have had it happen at this particular school at least once a semester. I know they are trying to be helpful to their child, but in reality it just impedes the kid from learning.

Sherrine-it has gotten worse. I have been teaching since 1992, and frankly am really tired of hearing 'but...but....but"

My dad was an English professor, and he got so tired of hearing, when calling upon a raised hand in the middle of his lecture, "Uh - is this gonna be on the test?", or "How do I get an A?"  mad   Talk about rude! He was so gratified when a kid would actually show an interest.

He was also pressured to give good grades to athletes who didn't deserve them. 


Good luck getting through it, Myself. Hopefully you have a nice, long break coming up after this.
