Not sure what's wrong

Hi new member here. I've had these strange symptoms for about 4 months. They just began out of nowhere. My entire body will feel this non-localized pain, most prominent in my back and shoulders, it runs up the sides of my face a bit too. I've tried to describe it to a few different doctors and they really couldn't help me because of my lack of an accurate description. It mostly feels like pins and needles, sort of like if your arm or leg "falls asleep." Pins and needles is such a mild description though. I'll get goose bumbs and chills. It is so debilitating that I can't even stand the thought of taking a shower, my body will respond to the most mild of touches, or a mild change in temperature. My girlfriend will lightly touch my face and it will send this intense shock of pain all down my body, I cringe at the thought of even being touched. It comes and goes throughout the day in different intensities but significantly calms down when my body is at rest. Sitting at the computer reading, and especially when I go to sleep. It goes away completely as I lie down and ill wake up feeling great, that is until I actually get out of bed to get dressed. My body will respond to changes in temperature both hot and cold but mostly cold. I got lucky because very early on my doctor prescribed neurontin for anxiety and I discovered that it worked really well in calming this pain. At higher doses it stopped it completely and I finally felt normal. I had to take increasingly larger doses though and I found myself running out early and suffering until I could get a refill. I'm on vyvanse for ADD so I'm not really tired but i could sleep for 12 hours a day before I started it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've had no injuries or surgeries or anything. Thanks.

I take Neurontin too (well, Gabapentin, the generic) and it helps my pain. I didn't realize people take it for anxiety. Anyway, I take it for nerve pain since I had a lumbar disc rupture and then surgery....what rang a bell for me was your description of the pain "running." That's what nerve pain does, it follows a nerve or nerves...so I would agree with Karen. The pins and needles feeling, too, sounds like nerves.

But of course, we're not doctors, so hopefully you're under the care of a good one?

OK thanks for the responses, my doctor actually started me on cymbalta yesterday.

Yes, it does sound familiar. Just wondering if you have seen a neurologist yet? They may do some testing to help pinpoint the problem--or at least find something close to a diagnosis. Best wishes.

Hi Sicboy, what you describe sounds horrible and very familiar, although i mostly experience it when I am lying down or at rest, not so much as I move. Like someone suggested, you might want to be evaluated by a neurologist to make sure it is not something neurologically related. Fibro symptoms can strike outta nowhere and are very debilitating, but you learn to live with it, the most important thing is to het a Dx first.

Hmm I didn't realize at first but is fibro almost exclusively an illness affecting females? Maybe my symptoms are from something else then. I see my Dr. on Tuesday and I'll ask for a referral to a neurologist for sure because im tired of just masking the symptoms with meds and not doing a more through examination.
