While conducting some online research for a paper I have due tomorrow I came across an interesting topic: "Improvement of joint range of motion (ROM) and reduction of chronic pain after consumption of an ergothioneine-containing nutritional supplement"
As you probably guessed my paper is going to be on the role of nutrition in Fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and other chronic pain syndromes. So far I've come across some very interesting peer-reviewed studies, but not nearly as many as there should be and most were small studies. We definitely need to do more large-scale research studies on this topic. Here is the link to the abstract for those interested:

Wow--'ergothioneine-containing nutritional supplement' is a mouthful! Your paper sounds so interesting. Hope you share some of the info with us. I will check the website you mentioned, too.
Good luck with your writing!

I worked with synthetic ergothioneine a couple of years ago and its a very interesting compound. A specific transporter for the molecule exists in humans and mutations in the transporter are correlated with diseases like Crohn's and IBS, suggesting this compounds metabolism is associated with them. Its not a vitamin technically because there is no observable deficiency, its retained tenaciously in red blood cells and a few other places and comes into our diets largely through eating fungi. Many mushrooms contain relatively large amounts of ergothioneine and recent evidence suggests many bacteria also produce ergo.

Hi Luvzminis! I'm busy with finals these days but I'll soon be posting what I found out in my research. Seems a lot of the supplements we take have either not been studied at all or have only been studied by the manufacturer, therefore these studies reflect a bias and conflict of interest. The studies that have been conducted by independent researchers have been rather small, but there are a few supplements showing promising results. So worth a try. I'll post about
them when I get a chance over the weekend.
Tedmich...good info! Do you know of any large studies done on this Ergo? Is that the main reason they tell us mushrooms are good for us?
